Florida officials trying to solve the mystery of a $50,000 boat abandoned at a Florida dock are coming up empty in their search for the owner, who seems to have mysteriously disappeared.
Wayne Ball?s pricey boat ?Latitudes? was tied up at the Naples City Dock somewhere between the nights of June 6 and June 7.
The boat is still there six weeks later, which Naples Harbor Master Roger Jacobsen told ABC affiliate WZVN is highly unusual since vehicles are not typically left there more than one night.
"It's pretty odd. That boat came in and it has just been sitting, it has been abandoned," fellow boat owner Raymond Aiello told ABC affiliate WZVN.
Acquaintance Gene Luciano said mutual friends recalled seeing Ball two or three months ago, and were worried by the fact they couldn?t locate him.
?They were a little concerned,? Luciano told the Naples Daily News. ?It just doesn?t seem right and I have to agree.?
Jacobsen and the City of Naples started to look for Ball after his 30-foot catamaran was left unattended for a week. Adding to the mystery is that the boat is in perfect condition, with the bed made and Ball?s personal items left inside.
?If you?re going to abandon it, are you going to make the bed and all that stuff?? Jacobsen said to the Naples Daily News. ?Why not sell the boat first??
Some worry that Ball didn?t walk away from the boat on purpose, but suffered a tragic accident.
?I think he got drunk and fell in the water," Luciano told the newspaper. "He's a pretty good drinker."
So far Jacobsen and the police have been unable to find any good leads on Ball?s whereabouts, finding disconnected phone numbers and P.O. boxes overflowing with mail instead.
"We have totally struck out with trying to find this gentleman,? Jacobsen told WZVN.
But going off the radar isn?t unusual for Ball, his family and friends said.
His stepfather James Ewing told the Naples Daily News he hadn?t seen or heard from Ball in three or four years, while ex-wife Pam Ball hasn't seen her former husband in eight years.
"I have been, oh my gosh, racking my brains trying to get in touch with him," Pam Ball said. She said he owes her money and hasn?t seen his 13-year-old daughter since 2004. He reportedly has three children with another woman.
Records show Ball has had some past trouble with the law, including DUIs, grand theft, and bad checks.
While the search is on for Ball, his boat is racking up fees at the dock where it is parked to the tune of almost $1,500.
?We?re not looking at it as a violation yet,? Jacobsen told Wink News. ?We?re still looking at it as, ?Where are you Mr. Ball???
Anyone with information on Ball?s whereabouts is asked to call the Naples City Dock at 239-213-3070.
