A recent kerfuffle in the Japanese web community involved 2 channel, the world?s largest bulletin board service, banning certain summary sites from not just copying thread highlights, but also editing the occasional comment to add affiliate links, so this survey from goo Research, reported on by japan.internet.com, looked at what people thought about it.
Demographics
Between the 13th and 15th of June 2012 1,092 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 52.9% of the sample were male, 16.3% in their teens, 18.2% in their twenties, 21.3% in their thirties, 15.8% in their forties, 16.0% in their fifties, and 12.3% aged sixty or older.
I?d like to link to some of the sites that were banned ? note that the ban was not a legal ban, just a public warning ? but they really are heavily-wrapped in dodgy adverts for dodgy comics and figurines. Instead, here?s a link to a more detailed write-up of the story.

Yes, and have visited (to SQ1, SQ2) 50.7% Yes, but not visited (to SQ2) 10.7% No 38.6% Q1SQ1: About how often do you (did you) visit these sites? (Sample size=554)
Almost every day 18.1% About one day in three 9.7% About one day a week 21.3% About one day a month 19.7% Only when they appear in search results 29.6% Other 1.6% Q1SQ2: Did you know that 2 channel announced that certain summary sites were forbidden from copying content from 2 channel? (Sample size=671)
Q1SQ3: What do you think about 2 channel?s announcement? (Sample size=255)
Agree 23.1% Can?t say 58.4% Disagree 18.4% Reasons for agreeing included that 2 channel owned the copyright on the comments so these sites should follow the request, that extracting comments out of context could create a false impression, that some sites reposted erroneous information that caused prople problems and they wouldn?t correct them, and that it was unforgivable that people were profitting from the writings of others.
Reasons for disagreeing included that it was spreading useful information, it allowed lots of people to view older threads, that it was useful for catching up with fun, topical threads without having to wade through masses of dross, and that since ownership of the comments lay with the posters, it was strange for 2 channel to make such an announcement.
