The Inaugural Wheels - Arizona Auto Scene

Mesa, Arizona (October 27, 2012) ? The inaugural Wheels ?N Wings Car Show was held Saturday morning at the Commemorative ?Air Force Museum in Northeast Mesa.? For an inaugural show, it sold out the 275 spaces it had.? Automotive enthusiasts from across the Valley brought out their Classic and Muscle cars and put them on display on the museum?s tarmac.

One car?s interesting story is that of a Firebird belonging to a man named Chris.? Chris is from England and both bought and restored the Firebird there.? He had some great stories of traveling from the U.S. to England with auto parts, such the cars wiring harness in his luggage.? Drawing the curiosity of airport screeners, Chris was questioned about some of the parts for the Firebird during his travels to and from the USA. ?Chris now lives in the Valley and is out there in our local car show and cruising scene. ?Be sure to say hello of you see him.

Participants in the today?s show had the unique opportunity to have a photo of their vehicle taken under the wings on ?Stang,? a World War II era P51 Mustang, and a 1937 Stinson.? The cars were lined up.? As you can see, a Mustang posed with a P51 Mustang named Stang makes for a great photo.

The Wheels ?N Wings Car Show is a charity car show.? Proceeds from the show will go to benefit the Mesa Public Safety Foundation, supporting both the Mesa Police and Fire Departments.

Barb McReynolds, creator and organizer of Saturday?s show did a fantastic job with today?s event.? Well done!

CPR less likely for minorities on street or home

CHICAGO (AP) ? People who collapse from cardiac arrest in poor black neighborhoods are half as likely to get CPR from family members at home or bystanders on the street as those in better-off white neighborhoods, according to a study that found the reasons go beyond race.

The findings suggest a big need for more knowledge and training, the researchers said.

The study looked at data on more than 14,000 people in 29 U.S. cities. It's one of the largest to show how race, income and other neighborhood characteristics combine to affect someone's willingness to offer heart-reviving help.

More than 300,000 people suffer a cardiac arrest in their homes or other non-hospital settings every year, and most don't survive. A cardiac arrest is when the heart stops, and it's often caused by a heart attack, but not always. Quick, hard chest compressions can help people survive.

For their study, researchers looked at the makeup of neighborhoods and also the race of the victims. They found that blacks and Hispanics were 30 percent less likely to be aided than white people. The odds were the worst if the heart victim was black in a low-income black neighborhood.

The researchers also found that regardless of a neighborhood's racial makeup, CPR was less likely to be offered in poor areas. That shows that socio-economic status makes more difference than the neighborhood's racial makeup, said lead author Dr. Comilla Sasson, of the University of Colorado in Denver.

While few people in poor black neighborhoods got CPR, those who did faced double the odds of surviving. Overall, only 8 percent of patients survived until at least hospital discharge, but 12 percent of those who got bystander CPR did versus just 6 percent of those who did not.

About 80 percent of the cardiac arrest victims in the study had collapsed in their own homes. That suggests lack of knowledge about how to do CPR. But also, people tend to panic and freeze when they encounter someone in cardiac arrest, and they need to know that cardiopulmonary resuscitation is easier than many realize, Sasson said.

She said the study results should prompt public outcry ? especially since most people who suffer cardiac arrest in non-hospital settings won't survive and those statistics haven't changed in 30 years.

"We can't accept that anymore," she said. "It shouldn't matter where I drop to have someone help me."

The study appears in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine.

The researchers analyzed data from 2005-2009 from a cardiac arrest registry coordinated by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Emory University. They also examined U.S. Census data in cities where study patients were stricken ? including Atlanta; Boston; Columbus, Ohio; Denver; Houston; Nashville; and San Francisco. Whether similar results would be found in small cities or rural areas isn't known.

Much of the research was done before experts changed CPR advice in a move many think may encourage bystanders to offer help. American Heart Association guidelines issued in 2008 emphasize quick, hard chest compressions rather than mouth-to-mouth resuscitation ? removing some of the discomfort factor.

Mary Tappe owes her life to bystanders' willingness to offer help.

In 2004, she collapsed at her office in Iowa. A co-worker called 911; another quickly began CPR and someone else used the office's automated heart defibrillator. An ambulance took Tappe to the hospital, where doctors said her heart had stopped. They never determined why but implanted an internal defibrillator.

Tappe, 51, who now lives in Englewood, Colo., said raising awareness about the importance of CPR is "incredibly important because that's the first step" to helping people survive.

CPR specialist Dr. Dana Edelson, an assistant professor at the University of Chicago Medical Center, said the new research echoes smaller studies showing bystander CPR depends on neighborhood characteristics, including a Chicago study that found intervention occurred most often in integrated neighborhoods.

"Nothing that we do has as big an impact on survival as CPR, and it's so cheap," Edelson said, noting that online videos demonstrate how to do CPR.

It involves pushing hard and fast on the victim's chest; research has shown using the beat of the old Bee Gees song "Stayin' Alive" is a good guide.

"It's your ultimate low-budget solution to improving survival," Edelson said.

Dr. David Keseg, an emergency medicine specialist at Ohio State University, has helped teach CPR to eighth-graders in inner-city Columbus, Ohio. That includes giving them free classes and CPR kits.

"We tell them to take them home and show their families and neighborhoods how to do it," Keseg said.

"It's kind of a drop in the bucket," but it's the kind of targeted approach that is needed to improve the odds of surviving a cardiac arrest, he said.

Union: Ford to close Belgian plant in 2014

By RAF CASERT
Associated Press

BRUSSELS (AP) - A union leader said Wednesday Ford Motor Co. has decided to close one of its main factories in eastern Belgium by the end of 2014 in a move that will result in 4,500 direct job losses and 5,000 more among subcontractors.

Exactly half a century after construction on the Genk plant started, local Ford management read a letter announcing the move at a specially called council , Christian Democrat union representative Johan Lamers said.

"This is taking us by surprise and is an extremely bitter pill," Lamers told the Associated Press.

Ford Motor Co. has been under pressure in Europe due to the region's dwindling demand for its cars and reflects the overall slide of car sales in Europe.

The plant in Genk makes the midsize Mondeo and the S-MAX minivan. The company expects to lose more than $1 billion this year in Europe, where it gets a quarter of its sales. Analysts say the company has more factory capacity than it needs.

Lamers said the production of the Mondeo will move to Valencia, Spain.

Ford has been struggling in Europe. Figures from Acea, the European carmakers' association, show an overall slide of sales for the European market of 10.8 percent on a year-by-year basis in September. Meanwhile, Ford's drop in sales was 14.9 percent.

Ford's European management was expected to meet with Belgian Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo and regional Flemish authorities later Wednesday.

The announcement came barely a month after Ford had given reassurances about production at the Genk plant, Lamers said.

Ford Genk represents more than 30 percent of car production in Belgium.

Workers took the announcement early Wednesday with relative calm. A fire was set up at the gate of the plant but there was little action - especially since the factory was in the middle of a three-week layoff because of slack demand.

Israel says 79 rockets fired at it from Gaza

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Palestinians fired dozens of rockets into Israel from Gaza on Wednesday and an Israeli air strike killed a militant, a day after the Emir of Qatar made a rare visit to the enclave's Hamas leadership.

Hamas claimed responsibility for some of the rocket and mortar bomb attacks, prompting some Israelis to wonder whether it had been emboldened by the Qatari visit on Tuesday that broke the Islamist group's diplomatic isolation.

In recent months, Hamas has largely held its fire when other militant factions have launched cross-border rocket attacks, but the sudden upsurge in violence stoked fears that the hostilities could escalate further.

Hamas accused Israel of stepping up air strikes in the Gaza Strip, a move it said was meant to convey Israeli anger over Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani's visit, and pledged to "continue to hold a gun ... until Palestine is liberated".

Israel said it was "astounding" that Qatar, a U.S.-allied Gulf state, would take sides in the Palestinian dispute and endorse Hamas, branded by the West as a terrorist group. Hamas seized the Gaza Strip in 2007 from fighters loyal to the Fatah faction of Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Some analysts saw the Qatari ruler's trip, the first by any national leader to Gaza since Hamas took over, as an attempt to build bridges between the group and the West and coax it into the peace camp amid Arab turmoil across the Middle East.

A Palestinian official said Egypt was trying to mediate a truce.

"The contacts Cairo made resulted in a verbal promise by Hamas to calm the situation down and Israel said it was monitoring calm on the ground and would refrain from attacks unless it was subject to rocket fire from Gaza," said the official, who is close to the talks.

Israeli officials had no immediate comment. Previous rounds of cross-border attacks have usually fizzled out in days, with both Israel and Hamas seemingly aware of the risks of ramping up the low-intensity conflict.

Israel's three-week-long invasion of the Gaza Strip, launched in 2008 with the declared aim of curbing rocket launches, drew international criticism over a heavy Palestinian casualty toll.

Though hostile to Israel, Hamas has mostly sought to avoid direct clashes as it shores up its rule in the face of more radical challengers and seeks potential allies abroad.

NETANYAHU VISITS ANTI-MISSILE SITE

In a second day of violence, a Hamas militant was killed on Wednesday in an air strike, which Israel said was intended to stop rocket launches. On Tuesday, Israel killed three Hamas men, saying they had either launched attacks or were about to do so.

In southern Israel, three agricultural workers were wounded when a Palestinian rocket exploded near them.

An Israeli military spokeswoman, said 79 projectiles had been fired at Israel and that the Iron Dome system had intercepted eight of them. She said several homes had been damaged by Palestinian rockets.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is seeking a renewed mandate in Israel's January 22 election, visited an Iron Dome anti-missile battery near the southern city of Ashkelon on Wednesday and threatened stronger Israeli military action in Gaza.

"We did not choose this escalation, nor did we initiate it, but if it continues, we are prepared for a much wider and deeper operation," he said, pledging to press on with "targeted attacks" against militants preparing to fire rockets.

Israel kept schools shut in communities near the fenced Gaza boundary and residents were urged to remain indoors.

Hamas has refused to renounce violence or recognize Israel's right to exist, and is ostracized by the Quartet of Middle East mediators comprising the United States, United Nations, European Union and Russia.

However, Hamas has said it would accept a truce with Israel in return for a state in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip.

GOP Congressman Relied On Millions In Government Contracts To Build His Company

Rep. Steve King (R-IA) has enthusiastically embraced the Romney campaign myth that Obama attributes businesses? success to government, exemplified by the RNC slogan ?We Built It.? When it comes to his own construction business, however, it seems that King did not in fact build it. Salon reports that the construction company King prides himself on building ?up from one bulldozer? was in fact sustained by more than $1.66 million in government contracts between 1994 and 2011:

But, as King now acknowledges, government contracts were a key part of his business going back some time. In 1987, he sued a client who had not paid him. An affidavit King filed includes a letter the future congressman sent to a customer in 1985 requesting payment. Explaining his urgency, King wrote at the time, ?as you are aware, we are in a very depressed farm economy and my only other market for my works is contract work from various government agencies.?

Documents show that King?s company worked regularly for various local governments throughout the 1990s and 2000s. In 1994, he demolished a firehouse for the City of Odebolt for $15,500. In 1998, he took about $82,000 from the same city for a memorial walk. In 2002, the company made $64,000 from Crawford County to stabilize a building, followed a few months later by a $141,000 contract with the City of Battle Creek for wastewater treatment improvements.

The next year, King was elected to Congress and his son took over the company, taking in at least 10 other municipal contracts through 2011 worth up to $200,000 each for everything from road construction to water treatment improvements. Altogether, from the firehouse demolition in 1994 to through a grading job for a local utility last year, King Construction made at least $1,665,000 in government contracts.

When asked about his company and its substantial government assistance, King told Salon, ?I built it. I built it on low-bid ? both private and public ? contracts. I created jobs and saved the taxpayers money on every road I built.?

King is just the latest Republican whose anti-government rhetoric is tripped up by a personal experience of how important government assistance can be to business owners. Even vice presidential candidate Rep. Paul Ryan?s (R-WI) family business relied on government contracts, while almost every small business featured by the Romney campaign has had some financial help from the government.

INVEST & MANAGE: Where to Grow London?s ?New? Hub Airport?

INVEST & MANAGE: Where to Grow London?s ?New? Hub Airport?

Posted 22/10/2012

It emerged at last week?s ?Invest and Manage Airports? conference at Stamford Bridge, the home of Chelsea Football Club, that Stansted Airport is becoming a popular new option to support London?s future air capacity concerns.? In a lively keynote address to a packed room of industry executives, consultants and media, Daniel Moylan, adviser to Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, argued that alongside the construction of a new ?50 billion hub airport to be built in east London in the next 15-20 years, Stansted was a real option to answering London?s air capacity issues. ?In his 30 minute address, Moylan also called for the UK government to bring forward its decision on airport expansion to next year, ahead of the next General Election.

Speaking at the ?Invest and Manage Airports? conference on October 19, 2012, Moylan said the issue of a new hub airport in London was an urgency that had to be dealt with sooner rather than later and lambasted the UK?s failure to develop a proper aviation policy over the last 50 years which has in fact consisted of a series of ?accidental decisions?.

22102012 Daniel Moylan

Moylan said that it was time for the UK to have a ?consistent airport policy? which understood the need for a ?well functioning hub airport?. ?He said that Heathrow in its current state ?does not have all the characteristics of a hub airport and therefore cannot be the country?s hub of the future?.? Instead he said the country should look to its neighbours, such as Amsterdam Schiphol, Paris Charles de Gaulle, and Frankfurt airports for examples of successful hubs.? "Our European rivals have seen the benefits of having a hub airport and the benefits it brings to a city," he said.

The Mayor?s adviser said that to remain a ?world city? London needs to remain well connected through aviation, citing a ?super connected highway of world cities that spans the globe?.? He said: ?London needs to remain part of that highway. Britain needs foreign investment and will lose it if it doesn?t remain part of that highway.?

In the case of Heathrow, London?s current largest international gateway, Moylan said it could never work as the UK?s future hub.? ?The site is far too constrained and only has two runways. ?But, the question is not where we can put the third runway, but more the fourth or the fifth. ?The airport has practically reached the limit of its growth,? he said.

According to Moylan, over the last 50 years the UK government has made ?no decisions at all? but instead ?kept its head in the sand?. ?Now, he said, ?we must look to our Dutch, French and German neighbours and learn lessons from them?.

As for building a brand new hub airport in the Thames Estuary, dubbed by the media as ?Boris Island?, Moylan said first of all the need for a new airport had to be accepted and then discussions on location would be held. ?That said, Moylan claimed east London would be an ?ideal place? to put the new infrastructure.? ?The east of London is known for a degree of deprivation, joblessness, and low life expectancy. ?The economic benefits that a new airport in the area would bring, would be transformative. ?However the key is to get an agreement on a new airport first, and worry about the location later,? he said.

Ruling out Gatwick as a potential hub due to it physically being on the wrong side of London to connect to northern rail links, Stansted was highlighted by Moylan as ?something Boris would consider?.? He said the airport has space to grow and high-speed railway developments could make Stansted a ?more attractive option? for London in the future.? However, he raised concerns over the ability to effectively to Canary Wharf and the Docklands business community.

?Stansted as it is today is not a solution.? Airlines don?t want to use it.? In fact nobody wants to fly there and to get anybody too it has to be cheap, cheap, cheap,? Moylan explained in an exclusive interview with The HUB following his keynote address.? ?But, as a location of a four runway hub, although it may not be quite as attractive as an Estuary airport for its regenerative potential, it does have some logic too it.?

22102012 Thames Airport 1

Moylan stressed the urgency of getting answers from the project and called for the new Aviation Commission to bring forward its recommendations on capacity expansion from 2015 to 2013.? A parliamentary statement is due in the next week or so, which will establish and confirm full details of the Davies Commission and Moylan is pushing for its findings to be reported before the end of next year rather than the envisaged 2015 date set by the Government.?

He said that the lack of urgency on a decision on airport capacity in the UK is "not related to the urgency of case or workload" but due to the fact that the recommendations are conveniently due to happen after the next general election.? However, he said this is ?not a political issue? and nothing to do with ?losing votes or seats ?as this would show ?a level of foresight? from the Government. ??Simply this is down to the Coalition and the fact that at the moment there are two parties who don?t agree on an aviation policy.?

It is essential we move forward as quickly as possible, according to Moylan as the Dutch, French and Germans are ?leeching business away from us? and there is a ?danger London will be at the end of a branch? rather than part of a ?super highway?.? ?They have already done this with our shipping business, and could now do the same with aviation,? he added.

If we build a new Thames Estuary gateway or develop Stansted as London?s ?new? hub airport, what future is there for Heathrow?? Well, according to Moylan, ?Boris doesn't want to see Heathrow Airport close? and there is a case that London could support two hubs, said he was not "overly swayed" on this and that Heathrow could instead remain operational as a single runway facility supporting premium and leisure traffic to the west London, although this wasn?t necessarily a view that was well supported by the audience.?

There was even a knock from Moylan into the plans from Birmingham Airport to become the short-term answer to London?s capacity constraints.? ?I keep hearing Birmingham Airport?s boss Paul Kehoe telling us he has space for ten million additional passengers.? I have no problem with Birmingham Airport?s strategy, but do ten million people actually want to go there,? he said.

Moylan shows a strong passion for the aviation debate, something he says his boss shares.? Formerly, deputy chairman of Transport for London, the statutory corporation established in 2000 that manages London?s Tube, buses and major roads, Moylan first began advising the Mayor on aviation following the last General Election in 2010.? He took on a new role as chairman of the London Legacy Development Corporation ? responsible for the development of the Olympic Park and its facilities after the London 2012 Games ? in June 2012 but last month stepped down from that role to concentrate full time on aviation.

?I have worked with Boris for two years now to bring London?s pressing need for a new hub airport to the top of the political agenda. ?The 2012 Games have shown that Britain can deliver major projects better than anyone if it has the will to do so.? A new hub airport to the east of London would be the greatest legacy we could create for London and the country at large. ?That is why I have accepted the Mayor?s invitation to put the majority of my time into aviation. ?The time for action is now and we need to bring the Government round to that view,? he said.

22102012 Thames Airport 2

Speaking exclusively to The HUB following his ?Invest and Manage Airports? address, Moylan revealed more about how serious his boss, Boris Johnson, is about this matter.? ?Boris is completely passionate and tied-up in all of this,? he said.? ?In his role one hundred and one things pass his desk and 95 per cent of this is routine work, but half a dozen things, education?s one of them and aviation is another, where he is passionately engaged in trying to achieve something.? We talk, text or speak to each other every day, including weekends.?

Moylan is forthright in his views and on behalf of the Mayor of London is really pushing for decisions to be taken in the air capacity debate.? We find ourselves in this position due to the lack of clarity and conviction in the decision making abilities of past Government ministers and he urged the Coalition to stand up and make a decision.? When questioned if we are 20 years too late with this decision making, he replied:? ?We are always too late in this country but it doesn?t mean we can?t catch up.?

As Moylan highlighted in his humorous opening to his ?Invest and Manage Airports? address, the Mayor of London and his constitute Londoners can at least take a little light from the slow decision making process; for as long as the Government debates the subject visitors to the UK capital can continue to enjoy ?long periods flying circles over London? and getting to see ?a wonderful view of the wonders of the city? as they wait for space to land.

Facebook mobile gains spur revenue growth

SAN FRANCISCO | Tue Oct 23, 2012 6:43pm EDT

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Facebook Inc grew mobile advertising revenue several times in the third quarter, a faster-than expected pace that helped reassure investors that the world's No. 1 social network is beginning to figure out how to earn money off smartphone and tablet users.

The company now gets 14 percent of its advertising revenue from mobile ads, translating into more than $150 million -- a surge from an estimated $40 million to $50 million in the second quarter and almost nothing in the first.

Mark Zuckerberg, the 28-year-old chief executive who created Facebook in his Harvard dorm room, said mobile was the "most misunderstood aspect" of the company.

"I want to dispel this myth that Facebook can't make money on mobile," he told analysts on a conference call.

Mobile advertising has been among the key investor concerns hanging over Facebook, helping slash more than $40 billion off its market value since its May IPO. As its users increasingly access the social network with their smartphones, Facebook has struggled to transition its business to mobile devices.

"They beat on the top line. They are talking about 60 percent of users on mobile. They are monetizing this OK," said Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter.

"Fourteen percent of total ad revenue is not chump change and some people were talking like it was zero. It's not bad monetization and a lot better than expected," he said.

The company's shares leapt 11 percent to $21.60 in after-hours trading on Tuesday.

Overall, Facebook posted a 32 percent jump in third-quarter revenue to $1.26 billion, as the company reignited advertising growth with the help of larger-than-expected gains in mobile.

Advertising revenue increased 36 percent to $1.09 billion, up from 28 percent growth in the second quarter. But revenue from its payments and other businesses increased just 13 percent to $176 million.

"Advertising revenue from mobile was the number that really stood out," said Sterne, Agee & Leach analyst Arvind Bhatia. "They are saying mobile ad revenue was 14 percent of total ad revenue. That would be about $140 million and I was expecting $40 or $50 million from this."

NOT PLEASED WITH GAMING

Zuckerberg admitted he was not pleased with revenue from gaming. Longtime partner Zynga Inc has been shedding users and fighting revenue losses, and now accounts for about 7 percent of Facebook's revenue, down from about 10 percent previously.

"The interesting thing is that the rest of the games ecosystem has actually been growing. Our monthly payments revenue from the rest of the ecosystem increased 40 percent over the past year, since payments has been adopted," he said.

Facebook said it had crossed the 1 billion threshold for monthly active users by September 30, of which 604 million were mobile users, a gain of 61 percent from a year earlier.

"We're really focused on accelerating the adoption of ads into mobile so we have been introducing more ads into the feed of different types," Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg told Reuters in an interview on Tuesday.

Third-quarter mobile revenue marked a big jump from the second quarter, when Facebook said that it was generating more than $1 million a day from the new class of ads, which appear in users' newsfeeds. Facebook said that roughly half of that revenue was from mobile ads, suggesting that mobile advertising revenue totaled $45 million in the second quarter.

The world's No.1 online social network company posted a net loss of $59 million, or 2 cents a share, in the three months ended September 30. It had a profit of $227 million or 10 cents a share a year earlier.

Excluding certain items, Facebook said it earned 12 cents a share, a penny higher than the average analyst expectation.

Its third-quarter revenue surpassed the average analyst expectation of $1.23 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

The Outdoor Project is complete!- interior design, decorating and ...

Sponsored by Nuffnang and Masters Home Improvement
After weeks of hard labour, our outdoor space is complete! Read on to see more...

When I accepted the task of transforming a space in our home on a budget I knew this would call for a challenge and, together with David, we committed to building a new outdoor space.

Here is what the space looked like before:

The original grassy space beside the house was in need of a makeover.

It was an area that was relatively unused and simply gathered leaves.

Short of kicking a ball around here we didn?t use it for much else.

We set about to build a paved area and a pergola from scratch using raw materials from Masters to create a space that we could relax and entertain friends in using existing outdoor furniture.

David and I designed the outdoor space and it turned out as we imaged it with a few minor changes ? such as extending the pergola outwards to have more space while still being able to use the existing lengths of timber we purchased.

The materials for the pergola and paving came in at less than $1000 and this left us with money to spare for plants.

I already had some leftover paint from previous projects and the main additional cost to us was the hiring of a compactor to compress the soil in the paved area.

We spent our last few weekends drilling / sawing / sanding / nailing / cleaning and clearing rubbish / reassessing the design / researching / making further visits to Masters for last minute products / painting (well into the evening) / planting and we got there in the end!

Four weeks from when the first pergola post was set into the ground we have a completed space.?And I must say a huge thank David for the amazing job he did of the pergola and the space.

Lifestyle shows can sometimes make it look easy to build structures such as these but it definitely takes more than one person to tackle such a job and when the person helping you (me) is of very little use in lifting heavy things the job becomes extra hard.

These photographs were taken over two weekends and as you can see the space has changed slightly as more plants have been added.

I imagine it will ?settle? into the space a little more over the next few weeks and over time it won?t look so shiny and new which will look lovely.

The other weekend David and I went to the Grand Designs Live event in Sydney.

David proudly showed a few people in the garden and landscaping exhibition stands the new space, including Jamie Durie!

Jamie was lovely and gave us advice on plants to fill the area and add colour, including lilly pillies and port wine magnolias.

We?ve yet to pick up some magnolias but we did buy lilly pillies, lemon trees, azaleas, hydrangeas, wisterias and palms.

I wrote about my experience trying to fit some of these plants into the back of my Mini?during one shopping trip.

In the end, we managed to turn the unused area of the garden into a fresh outdoor living space, consisting of a paved area, a planter section, partitioned by white picket fencing, under the canopy of the painted pergola.

What I love most is that the space will change over time.

I am hoping the wisterias will grow to cover the pergola and the lemon trees will give us fruit and we can plant flowers and herbs and vegetables in the hanging pots.

We also have plans to add lighting and outdoor heating for the cooler months.

Overall the experience was fun and a lot of hard work but we now have a beautiful space to enjoy.

THANK YOU to Masters for the opportunity to work on this project and also to David for all his help ? and bring on the summer parties!

PS. The winner of the $500 Masters voucher has been announced and it is R Skinner - congratulations!

She plans to use her voucher to put towards these items from the Masters website ? enjoy your purchases.

50 life lessons my grandfather taught me. ? AARP

Caregiving | Home & Family | Relationships | Your Life Print

Editor?s note: This is first in a two part series.

It?s been one month since I lost my Pop Pop, the Bernie in my blog Arthur & Bernie. He was 96, so it?s hard to say it came as a shock, but somehow, it did.

With Pop Pop

He is finally at peace after months of struggle, and for that, I am thankful. It?s difficult, though, moving on with life as usual, when I?ve never known it without him. For 30 years, Pop Pop was my grandfather, my pen pal, my friend.

One thing people say when you?re grieving is, ?He lives on in you.? Or, ?He will always be in your heart.? It?s supposed to be comforting. He?s not gone completely. But here?s the thing: I have a terrible memory. What if, slowly, he starts to slip away?

So I?ve put together a list of important lessons I never want to forget ? things he taught me, things our relationship taught me. My hope is that some might sound familiar to my fellow grandchildren out there. And aren?t we all?

1) Never feel old. Pop Pop would shake his head at the ?old people? in his nursing home. It never occurred to him that maybe he was one of them.

2) Answer the phone. I play phone tag with friends for weeks, but Pop Pop? He never let it go to voicemail. If he was around to hear the call, he?d answer.

3) Friendship is generation-less. Pop Pop never talked to me like a kid. I never talked to him like a senior. I think we both appreciated that equally.

4) Be the ?other.? Within approximately 10 minutes of meeting Bernie, he?d tell you that his family was the first Jewish family to settle in his hometown. He was proud of that. Being different is good, he taught us. It?s about identity.

Ruth and Bernie, just married

5) Love arrives when you least expect it? For Pop Pop, it turned up on a blind date.

6) ? And when it?s right, it never leaves. The blind date turned into 68 years of marriage with Ruth, my Dibi.

7) Wear blue, black and gray. Browns and tans, they come and go. But these classics withstand the test of time, he told me. And I believe him. He owned a fine clothing store, after all ? and donned skinny ties long before Don Draper.

8) Follow and lead. Dibi was a ballet dancer so, naturally, she led on the dance floor. She also carried conversations, organized meals and arranged their social calendar. When Alzheimer?s disease stole her away, though, Pop Pop stepped up to the plate, strong silent type be damned. It was his turn.

9) Watch (and rewatch) ?Fiddler on the Roof.? L?chaim, l?chaim! To life!

10) Find Your Routine. Make rituals for yourself, and keep them. But remember: Friday nights are for pizza (Penn Gables, if you?re in the neighborhood), and Sunday mornings are for Meet the Press.

11) Have a signature drink. I ordered Penn Gables for us once, with two Heinekens. I put my name on the order (just ?Laura?), but when I got there, they said, ?Bernie Covitch?? I asked how they knew. ?Heinekens? It?s got to be Bernie.?

12) Family IS everything. Pop Pop anticipated family visits for months and months. Nothing made him happier than seeing us all together. When I was there in August, I asked if he ever wished that we all lived in town, that we weren?t so spread out. ?No,? he said without missing a beat. ?You visit.?

13) Invite newcomers. Family is everything, yes, but it should be open to everyone. Case in point: Michele, Pop Pop?s caregiver. She was so much a part of the family by the end, thanks to Pop Pop?s affection, I programmed her in my phone with our last name.

14) Bananas are for splitting. He?d take one half, I?d take the other, and then we?d slice over cereal. One small cup of coffee, one piece of toast with jelly. Breakfast, done.

15) Make the bed. Also part of the morning routine. No question. The day will be better.

16) Run. Or find the thing that gets you moving. It?s never too late. Pop Pop started running in his 60s, and acquired more than a few ?oldest finisher? plaques, which he displayed proudly.

Bernie?s 95th birthday surprise, complete with t-shirts for the Ninety-5K we ran in his honor

17) Take off your headphones. Granted, Pop Pop ran in the days before iPods, but still. Jog or walk or drive without music once and a while. You might find you like what you hear.

18) Surprises are the best gifts. Especially when they involve masks, costumes or homemade T-shirts.

19) Surround yourself with encouragement. On the shelf by Bernie?s living room chair, he kept a 5?7 pillow with the following message stitched in: ?Old age is not for sissies.? Right on.

20) Share your history. Also next to the living room chair: stacks of photo albums sorted by trips, special occasions and eras (?The War Years,? ?The Store?). It was his way of organizing memories, and being able to relive them whenever he wanted. We spent hours together walking through his past.

21) Cry. Whenever you feel like it. Especially when you?re with other people, so you can laugh together afterwards.

22) Savings are for travel. My grandparents used their retirement to see the world ? Portugal, Peru, China, Turkey, and the list goes on. They loved their small Pennsylvania community, but they understood the value of discovering a local and global perspective.

23) When in Rome, buy art. Or a tablecloth, or a leather bag that will never go out of style. The point: When you travel, don?t come home with tchotchkes. (Or, only tchotchkes. Pick up some funny things!)

24) Look away. Choose your battles, and the ones you leave out? Don?t let them get you down. It was probably Pop Pop?s favorite family expression: ?Just look away.?

25) Make lists. And not just of to-dos. Keep lists of anything and everything significant, preferably in chronological order with dates, but that?s not mandatory. I have a feeling he would have loved this one.

Come back next week for the last 25 lessons ?and in the meantime, tweet me what you learned from your grandparents or parents at #50lessons

4 Must-Read Marketing Tips for Freelancers | Small Business Bonfire

All freelancers are small business owners, but not all small business owners are freelancers. That?s why a one-size-fits-all approach to marketing can?t be applied to the gift shop owner with a downtown storefront and the freelance designer who works out of his home office.

Freelancers are unique in that they alone bear the burden for a business?s successes and failures. No one else can be held accountable. With all of the other hats a freelancer must wear, no one will blame you if marketing efforts get pushed aside while you get that rush project out the door for your biggest client. But you probably won?t have a new client lined up when that project ends either.

So how can freelancers market better?

1. Start with your brand.

What do people think of your company? How do they feel when they see your logo or hear your name? By shaping how people will answer these questions, you can move beyond just logos and taglines to developing a solid brand identity.? A strong brand will actually make your marketing easier, whether you?re sending out postcards, posting to Facebook, or printing your business cards.

2. Make marketing part of your routine.

Marketing yourself, whether through social media or more traditional forms, is essential, and it should be done daily. Relax! You don?t need to put in 8 hours every day for marketing. Start with 20 or 30 minutes, if that?s all you?ve got. The key is to consistently reach out to potential clients who may not know how badly they need your services.? Then, once a month or so, you can dedicate a full day to larger marketing goals. Maybe focusing on the website overhaul you?ve been putting off for months.

3. Pitch to big clients.

When you get one or two big clients under your belt, doors will start to open up more quickly for you. So pitching to bigger companies isn?t just a way to bring in immediate money; it?s a way to market your freelance business as a legitimate, stable business venture. Sure, smaller companies are easier to land because the competition?s not as steep, but working for larger clients can really help your business take off. Don?t be afraid to try to sell to the big guns.

4. Track your success.

Keep track of your pitches and make note of the ones that work. Your system doesn?t have to be overly sophisticated; a simple sheet of paper with columns and tally marks will do the trick. Learn what marketing channels are bringing in clients, and develop a plan of action for continued growth. Maybe it?s time to give up e-newsletters and focus on social media marketing? You won?t know until you start analyzing those numbers.

"Is anybody sane here?" said the psychiatrist to the journalists

The psychiatrist is Allen Frances. The journalists are 48 enthusiastic and committed participants at the National Institute of Health's 2012 Medicine in the Media course (#NIHMiM12). It's an evidence boot camp that started on Sunday night (October 14), with 12-hour-days ahead - and many of those hours will be spent learning about statistics. But the audience's eagerness for this immersion experience was not the reason for the question about their sanity. Frances is a retired psychiatrist and you might know of him from his blogging or frequent media interviews. He chaired the committee that developed the DSM-4: the 4th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. And he's a key leader in the charge of dismay about the next edition, DSM-5, that's due to appear later this year. It will likely vastly expand the many ways you can get a mental illness label. You can read more about that at Scientific American and an important article on conflicts of interest in PLoS Medicine. The intriguing question about our sanity wasn't directed particularly at the journalists, scientists and doctors in the crowd. It was a dig at what Frances called "diagnostic inflation" in psychiatry. Even with DSM-4, this problem was already starting to gallop away from us, as more and more of the "symptoms of daily life" were re-cast as mental disorders - with drugs carrying common adverse effects and a high price tag as the prescription. How big is the problem? Using DSM-4 criteria for mental disorders, almost half the people in the US are getting a diagnosis of a mental disorder in their lifetime - and other countries aren't far behind. Frances fears that "the pool of normal is becoming a small puddle." Unless there are more changes, in the world of DSM-5, if a person can get out of childhood and adolescence without a mental illness label, it could be something of an achievement. People aren't changing, Allen said, but the new labels and widening of scope of existing labels set the scene for "epidemics" of illness. The symptoms of everyday life are being misinterpreted as - treatable - mental disorders, even when diagnosis is fuzzy at best and the benefits of treatment don't outweigh the harms. It's a problem that is not restricted to psychiatry, as an article and conference announcement about over-diagnosis in the BMJ this year pointed out. Frances called for "Saving Normal" (the title of his forthcoming book). Some of his prescriptions are radical. For example, not just fines for drug companies that misbehave, but reduction of patents. And an "FDA" to determine diagnoses rather than allowing specialist groups who are over-invested in their "pet" diagnoses to hold such sway: "If you're an expert you love your diagnosis - it becomes your pet. It's human nature." Allen pointed to the change in power of the tobacco industry as a reason for hope that the tide could be turned on this issue. He called on the media to pay more attention to the fines being levied against companies who breach marketing rules, and less to the "breathless claims" of press releases promoting diseases and treatments. Frances Allen got the 2012 Medicine in the Media course started with a storm of intellect and passion - and tweets; lots of tweets (hashtag NIHMiM12). As you'd expect from a meeting of 48 committed journalists with a shared beat, this is an articulate, well-informed and feisty crowd. One of the first questions to Frances referred to his call for skepticism about the claims of passionate experts hyping a pet issue. He was asked, as a passionate expert himself: "Why should we believe you?" The spirited dialogue on Frances' statements about benzodiazepines that followed was a demonstration of the value and importance of good journalism. Around 250 journalists applied for the course. The successful participants come from a range of major broadcast networks, one cable network (CNN), daily newspapers, science and women's magazines, radio and more. More blogging from the course to come. But for this first night, the last words have to be on the consequences of over-medicalization in health care more generally, where the well are over-treated and the needy are far too often under-treated. Frances had the death of a dear friend this weekend at the top of his mind. His friend was, against his hopes for a hospice ending, pulled into the vortex of hospital death. On this over-medicalization of dying: "It's an insult to the dignity of death. It's an insult to the dignity of love." Interests: I am presenting at the NIH Medicine in the Media course and while I work at the NIH's National Center for Biotechnology Information, I am not part of the organization of this event. The views expressed here are my own. Medicine in the Media is an annual event organized by the NIH's Office of Disease Prevention. Image: By the author at Statistically Funny
