Learn more about the history of Brazilian Jiu JItsu, the theories behind their techniques and why everyone should consider joining a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program!

Dr. Jigoro Kano (1860 - 1938) was the father of modern Judo, and with it the great grandfather of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Dr. Kano studied traditional Japanese jujutsu techniques but combined them with the idea of "randori" or "free practice". He introduced rigorous, live training to test all the techniques and determine which were the most practical.

Eventually, the word Judo was used more to describe a direction towards physical education. In particular, while challenge matches had been popular among the Jujutsu men of Kano's day, Dr. Kano forbid them. Kano's students when they engaged in no holds barred fights referred to themselves as doing "Kano JIU JITSU". Among these men was Mitsuyo Maeda.

Mitsuyo Maeda was also known as the "Count of Combat" and traveled the world engaging in matches. He specialized in the combat methods of Judo but used the term "Kano Jiu Jitsu". Under this name he eventually taught the Gracie family in Brazil. The two brothers Carlos Gracie and Helio Gracie developed what is today known as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

New York City is lucky to have Daniel Covel teaching Jiu Jitsu in Midtown Manhattan. Daniel began studying Judo at the age of 6 and is a black belt in Judo. He then went on to study Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and earned his black belt in Jiu Jitsu under Team Balance. Thus, Dan offers expert instruction in both gi and no-gi, with both standing and mat technique. He teacher Jiu Jitsu as both a sport and a martial art.

Dan Covel is a decorated competitor, placing in no-gi competitions at both brown belt and black belt level. He recently took gold at the 2012 Pan Am no gi competition. If you want to compete in traditional Jiu Jitsu, no gi or Mixed Martial Arts, Dan can prepare you.

Our classes are beginner friendly and appropriate for both men and women. You do NOT have to be a competitor or an athlete to benefit from Jiujitsu classes. With our program, you will learn self defense, get into awesome shape, look better and feel better.

A complete training program includes both gi (uniform) and no-gi (submission wrestling). At NY's Best Jiujitsu classes we alternate each week. We also make sure you train BOTH standing and mat technique.

One of the most beautiful aspects of Jiu Jitsu training is that with a submission, you know you are learning an effective technique but you don't have to injure your partnet

While some programs focus only on sport Jiu Jitsu, and many only offer training on the mat, our program is truly the complete martial art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Standing, you will learn gripping and Judo throws (using the uniform). You will also learn wrestling takedowns for no-gi and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). Remember, Dan Covel is both a black belt in Judo AND a decorated No-Gi competitor!

Of course, you will also learn the mat techniques that have made Jiu Jitsu famous including the use of the many kinds of guard techniques.
