Epic Gamer Artist: Locascio Designs | Epic Games Community

Welcome to this week?s edition of ?Epic Gamer Artists,? where Epic Games showcases amazing work from artists in the community. Tim from the Team Epic Gamers here, to introduce to you a very special feature this week.

I sat down with Michael Locascio from New Jersey, a sculptor who had been working professionally for almost 14 years. Many of his projects have included figures for McFarlane Toys, Blizzard, Gentle Giant, and NECA. You may recognize some of the figures; in fact, the work he?s done ultimately became final proofs early in the Gears of War line of NECA figures.

Say hello to Michael!

A: Tell us about yourself and what you do.

M: I studied classical sculpture at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine and the Newington Cropsey Foundation. Working with live models, skeletons, and annual cadaver dissections, I trained in anatomy and the bronze monument process there while studying at New York University. Since then I?ve worked as a fine artist in addition to building a prolific career sculpting action figures, toys, and collectible statues. I started with toys at the McFarlane Toys studio as an in house sculptor, and eventually went freelance working with other companies like NECA, DC Direct, Blizzard Entertainment, Diamond Select, Gentle Giant, and many others.

A: Are you a gamer? Do you play Gears of War?

M: I was a gamer for most of my life, growing up in the 80?s with arcades and the birth of console and computer games. Lately work and family has kept me from gaming, since it can really murder any free time I might have.

I played all the Warcraft incarnations since the early 90?s, but by the time I was sculpting action figures for them I had no time for playing. When I sculpted the Gears of War figures I played the game a bit to get the feel for the characters and the aesthetics of the game.

A: You?re a sculptor, and it?s pretty awesome to see what you come up with in your gallery. What materials do you usually work with?

M: Most of the toys I sculpt are in the 6?-12? range, with a few smaller and some larger. I learned how to sculpt with castilene wax at McFarlane and I?ve stuck with that material for the most part. Sometimes harder or softer clays are used, such as hazbro wax or chavant respectively. Also, for fabrication of mechanical pieces I use plastics like styrene.

A: Do you work as a professional artist?

M: Yes, I?ve been a professional artist for about 14 years.

A: Now I?ve noticed that you have some Locust designs in your gallery. They also look familiar? were they prototypes for NECA? Feel free to tell us a little bit about your creations.

M: All the Gears of War pieces in my gallery were prototypes for NECA action figures. I sculpted them twice the scale of the toys and they were pantographed down in production. The game designers provided excellent reference and turn-around art for the characters, and I did my best to get every detail faithful.

A: Do you also work in 2D, like drawing, or illustrating on paper?

M: When I started getting serious about art, I spent most of my time drawing and painting. But once sculpting really became a profession for me I have neglected other forms of art. Occasionally I have to sketch something out for a design, and I go to life drawing classes when I can.

Oddly enough, if I am drawing something from my head, I find it easier to grab some clay and rough it out, then look at the clay sculpt for reference in drawing.

A: Anything to say to your fellow Epic Gamers?

M: Video game characters are some of the most fun and rewarding projects I have worked on, and it?s awesome to hear appreciation from the people who love the games.

You can also check out Michael?s amazing work on Etsy, where you?ll find his sculptures, jewelry and more.

Storm Isaac hits Florida, threatens U.S. Gulf Coast

KEY WEST, Florida (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Isaac lashed south Florida with winds and heavy rain on Sunday after battering the Caribbean, threatening to interrupt most U.S. offshore oil production in the Gulf of Mexico and disrupting plans for the Republican National Convention in Tampa.

Isaac is expected to strengthen to a Category 2 hurricane and hit the Gulf Coast somewhere between Florida and Louisiana at midweek - on or near the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina - the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said in an advisory.

A hurricane warning was issued for the Gulf Coast from Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle, including New Orleans, which was devastated when Katrina struck the city on August 29, 2005, killing more than 1,800 people and causing billions of dollars of damage to the Gulf Coast.

In Louisiana, Governor Bobby Jindal declared a state of emergency and said 15 low-lying parishes outside New Orleans' newly built, $14.5 billion flood defense system would likely be under mandatory evacuation orders by Monday.

"There's really nothing that's going to stop this storm from forming and from strengthening," said Jindal, a seasoned crisis manager who has weathered such disasters as the 2010 BP oil spill.

On Mississippi's Gulf Coast, residents started stocking up on supplies and securing their homes. "It is packed. They are clearing the shelves," said Lindy Stewart after shopping at a Sam's Club in Gulfport. Stewart said she bought bread, lunch meat and other "stuff you need to survive a couple of days without power."

The Mississippi State Port Authority ordered the port of Gulfport cleared of all cargo vessels and cargo containers.

Isaac is forecast to become a hurricane either late Monday or Tuesday. The NHC said Isaac was expected to eventually intensify to a Category 2 hurricane with "extremely dangerous" sustained winds of 105 miles per hour as it swept up the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

Forecasters are predicting a more westward track that could bring Isaac over the heart of the U.S. offshore oil patch, which produces about 23 percent of U.S. oil output and 7 percent of its natural gas output.

SHUTTING OIL PRODUCTION

Meteorologists at Weather Insight, an arm of Thomson Reuters, predict the storm will spur short-term shutdowns of 85 percent of the U.S. offshore oil production capacity and 68 percent of the natural gas output.

With the threat to offshore oil infrastructure and Louisiana refineries, U.S. crude oil prices traded up 75 cents to $96.90 a barrel in Asia trading early Monday.

Once ashore, the storm could wreak havoc on low-lying fuel refineries along the Gulf Coast that account for about 40 percent of U.S. refining capacity.

That could send gasoline prices spiking just ahead of the U.S. Labor Day holiday, analysts said. "It's going right in the heart of refinery row," Phil Flynn, an analyst with Price Futures Group in Chicago, said on Sunday.

London-based BP Plc, the biggest U.S. Gulf producer, said it was shutting production at all of its Gulf of Mexico oil and gas platforms and evacuating all workers on Sunday.

At 5 p.m. EDT (2100 GMT) on Sunday, Isaac was about 40 miles southwest of Key West at the southernmost tip of the U.S. mainland, packing top sustained winds of 60 miles per hour, and churning southwest at 16 miles per hour.

Isaac was getting better organized and faced favorable conditions, increasing the possibility the storm could strengthen beyond a Category 2 hurricane, said NHC meteorologist David Zelinsky.

Tropical-force winds from the massive storm stretched across 400 miles, with rain bands extending even further, he added.

"It certainly is a large storm," he said, noting that wind gusts of 60 mph had been detected as far apart as Key West and Palm Beach.

The winds forced cancellations of hundreds of flights in and out of Miami, Fort Lauderdale and other south Florida airports. Miami Mayor Carlos Gimenez reported more than 500 cancellations affecting Miami International Airport alone.

More than half of the restaurants and other businesses were shuttered on Sunday in the tourist haven of Key West after many visitors heeded official warnings to head home early. Isaac began moving away from the Florida Keys on Sunday evening.

REPUBLICAN CONVENTION SCHEDULE DISRUPTED

Republicans, who will formally nominate former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney as their presidential candidate for the November election, will convene their four-day meeting on Monday as scheduled, then recess until Tuesday.

Tampa, located on Florida's west coast, still faces a threat of both winds and heavy rains from Isaac. But forecasters said a slight westward shift in the storm's track helped put Tampa out of harm's way.

In Haiti, Isaac added to the misery of more than 350,000 survivors of the 2010 earthquake still living in flimsy resettlement camps as water gushed into tents and corrugated plastic shacks ripped apart by the wind.

Authorities in the impoverished nation said on Sunday the storm had killed eight people, including three children.

In the Dominican Republic, officials said three people were missing, including the mayor of a town near Santo Domingo who was swept away as he tried to save another person from a flooded river.

No deaths or injuries were reported in Cuba, which got off lightly when the storm crossed its eastern flank instead of raking up the length of the island as originally predicted.

S.Africa mine killings expose violent union rivalry

The deadly industrial protests last week at a platinum mine in South Africa have laid bare a fierce and violent battle for domination among trade unions in Africa's wealthiest and leading democracy.

The killing of 44 people during a wildcat strike at the Marikana mine last week highlighted the depth of internal politics between the main and three-decades old National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the 11-year-old Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU).

The NUM has come under fire from workers accusing it of being alienated from day-to-day shop floor issues and having too cosy a relationship with management.

Boasting a membership of 300,000, NUM is the largest single affiliate of the 2.2 million-strong umbrella union Cosatu, a crucial ally and support base of the ruling ANC.

Hamadziripi Tamukamoyo, a researcher with south Africa's Institute of Security Studies said "some have argued that Cosatu ...have largely come to represent a 'working class aristocracy' and are too involved in ANC elite politics to adequately work in the interest of the poor."

Some digruntled NUM activists broke away to form a splinter independent union, AMCU in a bid to to close the gap.

But it is only in recent months that AMCU appeared to have consolidated its position. It quickly gained ground early this year after a six-week violent strike at Impala Platinum mine, the world's second largest, sitting on the same platinum belt as Lonmin.

Some 17,000 workers were sacked during the strike but then reinstated, after which AMCU said it had stripped most of the NUM membership to claim more than 50 percent on the its register and demanded recognition.

For a union to be recognised by law for collective bargaining purposes, it has to attain a membership of more than 50 percent of the workforce.

Violence and intimidation have become a culture to coerce workers to take part in strikes or join unions.

Unions survive on workers' subscriptions, often calculated as a percentage of their salaries.

The two unions denied being behind the deadly protests at Lonimn mine. ISS also said the strike was started by non-unionised labour.

But the AMCU leader Joseph Mathunjwa, accompanied by a group of praise singers, stormed into a memorial service organised for the victims of the Lonmin killins of Thursday and was given a platform to address mourners.

Some of the songs sung during the violent protests staged on a kopje in Marikana town, were anti NUM.

"It's very difficult to build a very strong worker solidarity...so you use violence to bring them together. Violence becomes a tool to achieve worker solidarity," said Crispen Chinguno, an industrial relations researcher at the University of Witwatersrand.

The violence can be linked to the post-aparthied social order, which Chinguno said bred strong trade unions, that are "covertly hostile to competition."

Workers, many of them unskilled, have openly changed allegiance to AMCU.

"I stopped being a member of the NUM because ...everyday, when we're in the strikes like this, they just told us 'go back to work' without any reason, without any answer that can satisfy us," said Joseph Motingwe, who defected to AMCU three years ago.

Belief in black juju has also taken root and was partly blamed for the workers'defiance during a standoff with police before 34 of them were gunned down.

Local media report that a video report shot by the police from a helicopter during the strike, showed naked men lining up to be rubbed with herbs that were believed would make them bullet-proof.

"The use of muti has become so institutionalised in everything they (unions) do," said Chinguno.

He said some of the 17,000 workers sacked and later reinstated at Impala believed they regained their jobs thanks to juju.

Diagnostic test shows potential to noninvasively identify significant coronary artery disease

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? Among patients with suspected or known coronary artery disease, use of a method that applies computational fluid dynamics to derive certain data from computed tomographic (CT) angiography demonstrated improved diagnostic accuracy vs. CT angiography alone for the diagnosis of ischemia, according to a study being published online by JAMA. The study is being released early to coincide with its presentation at the European Society of Cardiology Congress.

"Coronary computed tomographic angiography is a noninvasive anatomic test for diagnosis of coronary stenosis [narrowing of a blood vessel] that does not determine whether a stenosis causes ischemia [inadequate blood supply]. In contrast, fractional flow reserve (FFR) is a physiologic measure of coronary stenosis expressing the amount of coronary flow still attainable despite the presence of a stenosis, but it requires an invasive procedure. Noninvasive FFR computed from CT (FFRCT) is a novel method for determining the physiologic significance of coronary artery disease (CAD), but its ability to identify ischemia has not been adequately examined to date," according to background information in the article.

James K. Min, M.D., of the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute, Los Angeles, and colleagues conducted a study to evaluate the performance of noninvasive FFRCT compared with an invasive FFR reference standard for diagnosis of ischemia. The study included 252 patients with suspected or known CAD from 17 centers in 5 countries who underwent CT, invasive coronary angiography (ICA), FFR, and FFRCT between October 2010 and October 2011. About 77 percent of patients had experienced angina within the last month. Ischemia was defined by certain criteria. Anatomically obstructive CAD was defined by a stenosis of 50 percent or larger on CT and ICA. Among 615 study vessels, 271 had less than 30 percent stenosis and 101 had at least 90 percent stenosis.

Among study participants, 137 (54.4 percent) had an abnormal FFR as determined by ICA. The researchers found that the diagnostic accuracy for FFRCT plus CT was 73 percent, which did not meet a prespecified primary end point for accuracy (as pre-specified based on the lower limit of a calculated 95 percent confidence interval). By comparison, diagnostic accuracy of CT alone for detecting coronary lesions with stenosis of 50 percent or greater, was 64 percent. When comparing FFRCT alone with CT alone for detecting these lesions, FFRCT demonstrated superior discrimination.

"On a per-patient basis, diagnostic accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of FFRCT plus CT were 73 percent, 90 percent, 54 percent, 67 percent, and 84 percent, respectively," the authors write. They note that the sensitivity and negative predictive value of FFRCT were high, indicating a low rate of false-negative studies. "These diagnostic features of FFRCT may encourage a greater sense of diagnostic certainty that patients who undergo CT who have ischemia are not overlooked, such that clinicians may be confident in not proceeding to invasive angiography in patients with stenoses on CT when FFRCT results are normal."

Roger Goodell: Replacement officials would improve the NFL

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell sees no issue with starting the new season using replacement officials.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell sees no issue with starting the new season using replacement officials.

Image: Alex Brandon/AP/Press Association Images

NFL COMMISSIONER ROGER GOODELL says using replacement referees for regular-season games is worthwhile to ensure long-term improvements to officiating.

The league and the NFL Referees Association have yet to reach an agreement in their long-running dispute and Goodell acknowledged Thursday that time was running out to make the regular officials available for the openers.

?We?re anxious to get a deal done, but it has to get done so that it?s going to help us for the long term,? Goodell said at a fantasy football event in Times Square.

?It?s not a short-term issue.?

Of the replacement referees who have been calling preseason games, Goodell said: ?We think they?ll do a very credible job.?

Officials probably need a week to 10 days to prepare for the season, Goodell said, and the first game is September 5, 13 days away. The first full Sunday of games is September 9. However,?NFLRA lead negotiator Mike Arnold said Thursday that officials have been training on their own during the lockout and would need less than a week to prep.

?We?re ready to go,? he said.

While the NFL and officials disagree on some financial matters, Goodell also characterised the differences as ?philosophical.?

The NFL?s proposal includes making some referees full-time ? currently all game officials work part-time with outside jobs ? and adding more crews.?Arnold said the union was open to discussing such issues but any proposal to increase the number of officials while decreasing the pay for current referees was not viable.?Increasing the pool of officials would allow the league to replace individual officials or entire crews that are not performing well, Goodell said.

?Then it?s based on performance, which is what fans all want, players all want, coaches all want,? he said.

The replacement officials have been closely scrutinised during the preseason, with any error quickly pointed out by media and fans.

?It?s not our job to judge the replacements, because their performance speaks for itself,? Arnold said.

Goodell said he wasn?t concerned that teams and fans would question the credibility of results if that inevitable first disputed call of the season takes place while replacement officials are on the field.

?We have controversial calls. Officiating is an imperfect science,? he said.

?They?re not going to be correct all the time, but we have systems in place to try to help.

?We have instant replay, as an example, to try to help correct those mistakes.

?It?s like any game. We get calls every Monday from fans, from coaches, from teams upset about a particular call.

?That happens. And it will happen going forward regardless of who?s on the field.?

What Causes Childhood Obesity? ? Part 41Children's Health and ...

As many of my regular viewers to this web blog know, there are many factors contributing to childhood obesity. I post daily here about it, whether news print articles, opinions, feedback, or just personal opinion.

Recently, I wrote an article for Yahoo! (click here) about childhood obesity. I started searching for sources for this article, and received over 100 responses to the question, ?What do you think caused the rise in childhood obesity?? Responses came from professional and Olympic athletes, fitness experts, health experts, nutritionist, and parents.

I was unable to use everyone?s feedback, but thought it would be great to post some of their responses on my blog in a new web series, ?What Causes Childhood Obesity.? I hope that you enjoy the opinions here from various individuals. Please remember, my including their posts does not necessarily mean I agree or endorse their opinion, rather, a place to share other people?s thoughts.

Keeping Kids Fit

Opinion: Lisa Suriano

There is a combination of factors that has created a perfect storm for the childhood obesity epidemic. We can site the changes in our food system and culture of eating. American food culture has moved dangerously far away from whole, nutrient-dense foods and home cooking. The family meal is no longer a daily event and cooking skills in the population have diminished with the disappearance of home economics courses in schools. From-scratch meals made with whole foods have been replaced in the American diet by processed foods high in sodium and sugar. This societal behavior change has altered children?s tastes, preferences and familiarly with nutritious foods such as fruits and vegetables.

However, food is not the only culprit. The lack of physical activity for children is a key component to the rise of childhood obesity. Shockingly, there are many school days that do not include a PE or recess period. That coupled with children coming home to a vast array of video games, computer screens and any number of other sources of handheld entertainment has striped away the opportunities for kids to simply run around, be active and burn calories.

Nutrition and physical education must being given a valued place in the school day. To create a future generation that is sustainably healthy, it is critical for children to learn how to feed themselves well and take care of their bodies.

Richard Branson's My London

Where do you stay in London?

I have a home in Oxfordshire, but when I?m in town I tend to stay with my children, Holly and Sam, who both live in W11.

Best place for a nightcap?

I wouldn?t go anywhere in particular. I?d just head to Notting Hill and find a nice pub

Advice for a tourist?

London is one of the most exciting cities in the world with so many fantastic pubs and restaurants. I would urge people to get out there and see as much as possible.

Best meal ever?

I always enjoy dinner at the family-run Greek restaurant Halepi in Bayswater.

Do you collect anything?

I seem to collect companies. I start a lot of them because I just can?t resist a new challenge.

Building you?d most like to live in?

British Airways HQ, as long as all the take-off and landing slots at Heathrow would come with it.

What would you do as Mayor for a day?

Grass over about two-thirds of the city so the streets became places for kids to play and London was a collection of lots of little villages and not dominated by cars.

Where do you go to let your hair down?

The Roof Gardens in Kensington. It?s a beautiful venue with a great restaurant and wonderful views across the city. Plus, it has flamingoes, which I happen to love. In fact, I breed them on Necker Island.?

Biggest extravagance?

Owning your own Caribbean island is rather extravagant, isn?t it? I bought Necker Island for ?60,000 30 years ago and it?s given me so many happy memories, including Holly?s wedding earlier this year. We often have family and friends coming to visit.?

Animal you?d most like to be?

I?d be a tiger, even though they?re critically endangered. They?re the most extraordinary creatures. I went to India in the hope of seeing one but didn?t succeed.

Last album you bought?

I haven?t bought an album for a long time but I?m a big fan of Peter Gabriel and listen to his music a lot. He's also a good friend of mine. I saw him a few nights ago.

At the moment you are?

Concentrating on Virgin Atlantic?s new routes. We?ve just started flying to Cancun, which is the most amazing place, and we?re hoping to launch flights to Moscow next year.

Who?s your hero?

I absolutely love Archbishop Desmond Tutu. I know him quite well and he?s set such a great example with the work he?s done in South Africa. He?s taught us to forgive our enemies, which is important. He also has a wonderful sense of humour.

Earliest London memory?

I moved into a nice houseboat in Little Venice when I was 15 years old. I found a girlfriend called Monday and a houseboat called Friday, so I had the week sewn up.

Ever had a run-in with a London policeman?

Yes, but not for many years. When the Sex Pistols released the ?God Save The Queen? single on Virgin Records 25 years ago, we celebrated by going along the Thames on a barge and the police decided to interrupt the party.

Last three places you went on holiday?

I recently visited Madagascar, where I went walking in the rainforest to see the lemurs. From there, I went on safari in Ulusaba, my private game reserve in South Africa, and after that I swam with whale sharks off the coast of Mexico. They?re the biggest fish in the ocean with mouths up to five feet wide, but they?re gentle giants. I nearly swam right into one?s mouth.

Copper pipe is the best choice for plumbing home improvements, if the money is available for it. While safe and effective plastic plumbing exists, it still falls far short of copper, in terms of durability and reliability. All plumbers are familiar with copper and have plenty of experience working on it. Copper will also match the existing plumbing of older houses being renovated.

Take advantage of a small bathroom space by getting great deals on remodel materials. For example, your limited countertop and flooring needs translate to a higher likelihood of you finding both countertop and flooring remnants that will work at your local DIY, bathroom or carpet store. These remnants are still brand new but come at a steep discount thanks to their fixed dimensions.

If you have a lot of cords hanging out of your entertainment stands then you know what a pain and unsightly view cords can be. You can easily clean up your mess by using Velcro tape, which is widely available, at most stores for about $5. Roll up the unused portions of your cord and hold them together with the Velcro tape for a clean and tidy look.

Do you have home improvement projects that are beyond your skill level or that require more time than you have available? Your best solution might be to try a reputable handyman service. Ask them for references to see if they provide the standard of work that you need. They are usually a more cost-effective solution than hiring a contractor for the job.

Replace your garage door for a quick home picker-upper. The garage door is a focal point to many homes since it can be seen from the street, and is often also an eyesore. For around five hundred dollars, you can have a new garage door installed, and your home will have a fresh looking exterior.

When it comes to home improvement, be sure to get quotes from at the very least three different contractors. This is important because prices may vary greatly, as may the quality of work. Get a good feeling for your contractor by sitting down with him or her and discussing your entire plan.

Always keep your work area clean when doing home improvements. Many accidents occur when an area is cluttered with debris and you cannot move and work properly. Take some time from your project and clean the debris from the area. This will help keep you safe from trips, falls, and tangled cords.

Although hardwood floors are popular for the first floor, try to add carpet to the second floor rooms. This makes it more comfortable with stepping out of bed, as carpet is plush and comfortable for feet. Also, make sure to pick out a carpet with top of the line quality.

If you are looking to upgrade or renovate a room in your home, think about if you have the time and patience to complete the project yourself, or if you would be better suited to hiring a contractor or handyman to take control of the project. This way, you will be able to plan accordingly and get your project completed.

Always comparison shop for contractors when you need to fix up your home. Later, if you decide to sell your house, it is almost certain you will need to have some repair work done. If the work you require is extensive enough, you will have to hire a contractor. This is not something to do on the spur of the moment. Not all contractors are created equal; shop around before engaging one!

As you can see, home improvement can be very easy. With the tips above, you can accomplish the task of turning your home into your private sanctuary, a place you are proud to call home. What are you waiting for? Go ahead and start that home improvement project you?ve been thinking about.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) ? Rep. Todd Akin has defied the nation's top Republicans and refused to abandon a Senate bid that has been hobbled by fallout over his comments that women's bodies can prevent pregnancies in cases of "legitimate rape."

Akin took his message to conservative talk radio shows Tuesday, declaring GOP leaders were overreacting by insisting he abandon his quest to unseat Democrat Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri, and to social media with appeals on his Twitter feed claiming "liberal elites" are trying to push him out of the race.

Akin predicted he would bounce back from the political crisis threatening his campaign, including a call from presumptive presidential nominee Mitt Romney to leave the race.

But his bid faces obstacles ? chief among them a lack of money and party support.

GOP ticket criticizes Kansas rep.'s nude plunge

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and running mate Paul Ryan are criticizing a Republican congressman from Kansas who briefly swam naked in the Sea of Galilee.

Romney said Monday that last year's incident in Israel involving freshman Rep. Kevin Yoder was reprehensible. He says Yoder's action was a terrible mistake.

Ryan, a Wisconsin congressman, called Yoder's actions unbecoming.

Romney and Ryan made their comments during an interview with WMUR-TV in Manchester, N.H. (http://bit.ly/P9Uun0 )

Yoder has apologized repeatedly for taking his nude plunge in the Sea Galilee during an August 2011 fact-finding trip to Israel. He says he was in the water for about 10 seconds.

The Sea of Galilee is a holy site for many Christians because the Bible says Jesus walked on water there.

Anesthesia in young kids may carry developmental risks | Health X ...

While surgery carries risks for anyone, ?going under? can have some particular risks for the very young. A study coming out in the September issue of Pediatrics finds that children who have anesthesia before the age of 3, are at a higher risk for?developmental delay issues later in life. The study looked at more than 2,600 children in Australia who were tracked as part of the Raine Study . Authors found that by the age of 10, children who?d been exposed to anesthesia at a young age were more than twice as likely to have developmental issues with listening and speaking comprehension. "We can?t determine if the cause is due to anesthesia, surgical stimulus, or the medical condition. It could be another factor entirely. We just know there?s a difference,? says?Dr. Caleb Ing, assistant professor of pediatric anesthesiology at Columbia University Medical Center and lead author of the study. Dr. David Warner, professor of anesthesiology at Mayo Clinic, has also been studying the impact anesthesia has on development. While he was not part of this study, Warner agreed that surgery and anesthesia introduce a whole host of factors that may impact a child?s developmental outcome. ?It may be the surgery; it could be the underlying illness,? explained Warner. Previous studies have linked anesthesia in young children to increased risks in learning disabilities and ADHD . However this is the first study that has used a battery of neuropsychological tests to determine developmental delay. Previous studies relied on test scores, physician?s diagnoses ?and medical records. The children in the study were given tests that assessed?their listening, speaking, and abstract reasoning skills. Children who had had anesthesia were 1.87 times more likely to have listening comprehension issues, 1.72 times more likely to have problems with speaking and 1.69 times more likely to have abstract reasoning delays. The combined risk factor for both listening and speaking issues was 2.11. The group was also tested for behavior and motor function, but the authors found no significant difference in these skills between children who?d had anesthesia and those who hadn?t. The authors also compared children who had anesthesia once, versus 52 children in the study group who had it multiple times. ?We did see a difference in children with single and multiple exposure, but we couldn?t statistically prove a difference, because we need more patients that had multiple exposures than were available in this study,? said Ing. But while there are risks, Ing also warned that further study needs to be done. ?We don?t enough evidence to change our current practices,? he explained. ?Anytime you decide to do a procedure, you need to understand what the real benefits are," Warner says. "Parents need to ask, 'Do we really need to do this? How is this going to benefit my child?' In the vast majority (of cases), in kids this age, the benefits are real. But the risk is potential and not definite." He added, ?It?s been established as a risk factor, and needs to be part of the conversation as parents talk to their doctors.? Syrian children face grim Eid holidays

Syrian children had little to celebrate on Sunday as Muslims marked the first day of the Eid religious festival in the grip of unrelenting violence.

"The children in the Old City district are sad because there are no sweets, no food, no gifts, no new clothes this Eid," said a young man from the city of Homs in central Syria who gave Abu Bilal as his name.

The rebel-held Old City district has been under siege by regime forces for more than two months, and rights watchdogs have warned that hundreds of families are trapped there.

"Today I went to pray in the only mosque still standing in the neighbourhood," Abu Bilal told AFP via Skype. "We put sandbags on the windows before we started praying, in case the army shelled the mosque."

Two children were among at least nine people killed in violence on the first day of Eid al-Fitr, the festival celebrated by Muslims across the world to mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

"A boy and a girl were killed by regime forces' shelling in the (rebel-held) town of Maaret al-Numan" in the northwestern province of Idlib, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

According to the Observatory, violence has killed more than 23,000 people since March last year, including 1,300 children, while the UN puts the death toll at over 17,000 and says about 2.5 million are in need of help.

While President Bashar al-Assad made a rare public appearance with top officials for Eid prayers at a Damascus mosque, demonstrators took to the streets of the capital and other cities to vent their rage at the regime.

"Eid is here, Eid is here, God curse you, O Bashar al-Assad" protesters in the town of Qudsaya in Damascus province sang to the tune of Jingle Bells, according to amateur video posted on YouTube by activists.

In Damascus itself, Assad joined several top government and ruling Baath party officials at Eid prayers in Al-Hamad mosque.

"Syria will triumph against the Western-American plot being supported by the Wahhabis and takfiris (Sunni Muslim religious hardliners)," the imam Sheikh Mohammed Kheir Ghantus said, echoing the regime's long-standing rhetoric.

"With hardship, there is relief," he told worshippers, citing a verse from the Koran.

People also took to the streets in the northeastern Damascus district of Barzeh and several towns in Idlib, near the Turkish border, much of which is sympathetic to the 17-month-old revolt, according to the Observatory.

"This is how we celebrate Eid!" chanted a crowd of protesters who took to the streets of Kafr Zeita in the central province of Hama, according to amateur video posted on YouTube by activists.

Another video from Kafr Zeita showed a black-clad woman who has lost her children to violence stood before a silenced crowd as she wept: "May Assad's heart burn just like he burnt ours."
