LoveFilm introduces HD streaming in the UK and Germany, adds another nail in mail rental coffin

Lovefilm certainly seems to be on the charm offensive to secure those movie viewing eyes. Yesterday it was the announcement of an exclusive deal with NBCUniversal, and today it's HD streaming for its "Instant" service. Subscribers in the UK and Germany can suck up full 1080p content when viewing on a Mac or PC, and 720p when watching via Xbox 360 or Smart TV (UK only) at no extra cost. The HD library is rolling out now, and currently includes only a selection of films and TV shows, but is set to expand over the coming months. So if you're a paid up member, you can start browsing the library today, and hunt out those HD badges.

APNewsbreak: Report details mass shooting in Ariz.

(AP) ? All four people killed by a former neo-Nazi before he turned the gun on himself this month in a quiet Phoenix suburb were shot in the head, according to a police report released Tuesday that paints the clearest picture yet of the gruesome crime scene.

Various Gilbert police officers and detectives wrote about what they saw at the home where they believe Jason Todd "JT" Ready, 39, shot and killed his girlfriend and three others, including a toddler, before killing himself in a domestic dispute.

Ready was the leader of the U.S. Border Guard, a group of armed civilians that patrols Arizona's desert for illegal immigrants and drug smugglers.

When they first arrived at the home, authorities saw the bodies of Ready, wearing only tan shorts and boots, and another man. Both were dead with pools of blood beneath their heads. A camouflaged gun was near Ready.

When police walked to the home's open front door, they saw the bodies of Ready's girlfriend, her daughter and her granddaughter, a 15-month-old girl named Lilly.

The women were clearly dead. But when officers checked the toddler, they found signs of life, according to the report.

"I could see brain tissue and a pooling of blood next to her head," wrote Officer Veronica Roden. "Her arms and neck were still warm to the touch, and we both detected a pulse on the inner part of her upper left arm."

Gilbert firefighters strapped the girl to a backboard and rushed her to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

When officers went farther into the home, they heard a woman crying in a locked bedroom and kicked in the door. They found a 19-year-old sister of one of the victims. Because police had to clear the home, they forced the woman, Brittany Mederos, to walk by the bodies of her mother and sister, and her dying niece.

"Upon entering the hallway, the female observed the bodies on the floor at which time she began crying hysterically," wrote Officer Chris Zamora. "I advised the female to 'Just keep walking' as I continued to escort her, stepping over the body of at least one of the female victims and around the other two victims."

Another officer described having to tell Lilly's father, Jess Boggs, that the toddler was dead. He arrived after the police tape had been put up around the home and surrounding houses.

"Jess showed me a picture of Lilly on his cellphone," wrote Officer Michael Cluff. "I immediately recognized the child as the same child I had observed within the house. Jess seemed to recognize my reaction to seeing the picture, and he began to wail and cry."

Are Pets Psychic Or Just Super Sensitive? :: Pet Health Blog

PNP_BlogImage copy

We?ve all heard the stories:

  • a pet cat jumps up onto the windowsill every day, several minutes before its owner arrives home
  • a pet dog barks just before a certain person calls on the phone, as if knowing the call was being made
  • a pet parrot, who?s learned to talk, says things seemingly in response to what its owner is thinking
  • a beloved pet, somehow lost on a family trip, miraculously finds its way home ? sometimes traveling hundreds or even thousands of miles

How are these things possible? Do our pets ? perhaps even all animals ? possess some innate psychic ability that allows them to tune in to human brainwaves or even to see the future? Or are they just more sensitive than humans to visual, aural, magnetic and other subtle environmental factors and changes ? and because we are not aware of these subtleties, their actions seem miraculous?

It?s an ongoing debate, usually with the psychically minded and a lot of devoted pet owners on one side, and the more skeptical and scientifically minded on the other.

Rupert Sheldrake, author of Dogs That Know When Their Owners Are Coming Home (Three Rivers Press, 1999), believes that animals have abilities that humans may have possessed at one time, but somehow lost. Through his extensive research, he has concluded that there are three major categories of unexplained perceptiveness by animals:

  • Telepathy ? a psychic connection that some pets may have with their owners through connections Sheldrake calls ?morphic fields.? It is this ability that enables pets to ?know? when their owners are on their way home.
  • The Sense of Direction ? this ability accounts for the ?incredible journeys? some animals make to be with their owners, including homing pigeons
  • Premonitions ? which may explain why some animals seem to know when earthquakes and other events are about to occur.

Telepathy

In the section of Sheldrake?s book focusing on telepathy, he asserts that this ability arises from the strong bond that develops between human and family pet. He relates several anecdotes from pet owners who believe their animals are psychically picking up their intentions. For example:

I just cannot understand how my dog, Ginny, a mixed breed I have had for seven years, can know when I am going to walk him. Only my thinking of it is enough for him to jump about joyfully. In order to exclude the possibility of eye contact and information through the other senses, I left the dog outside in the garden and behind closed windows and doors when I thought of taking him. And still the same result every time: He acts crazy out of sheer joy and expectation. When I dress to leave for work, however, he remains totally quiet.

It could be argued that this very perceptive dog is picking up some kind of cues from the owner without the owner realizing it. There could even be an odor cue that a human releases with a certain intention that only the dog can smell. More difficult to explain, however, is the story of a cat in Switzerland that seemed to know when a specific telephone call was coming:

After my father had retired he sometimes worked for an acquaintance in Aargau. Sometimes he called us from there in the evening. One minute before this happened, the cat became restless and sat down next to the telephone. Sometimes my father took the train to Biel and then used a moped to get home from there. Then the cat sat down outside the front door 30 minutes before he arrived. At other times he arrived at Biel earlier than usual and then called us from the station, and the cat sat down near the telephone shortly before the call came. After it she went to the front door. All this happened very irregularly, but the cat seemed to know exactly where he was and what would happen afterward.

The Sense of Direction

The stories about animals that have made long, sometime arduous journeys to be reunited with their owners are some of the most incredible and compelling cases for unexplained animal powers.

Before Sheldrake gets to that, however, this section of the book also includes the migratory habits of birds and other animals ? species that have been following the same travel patterns for hundreds or even thousands of years. Science regards this as instinctual behavior (what is instinct anyway?) that is aided by visual cues in the form of landmarks, the position of the sun and possibly the stars, odor clues carried by prevailing winds and water, and possibly even the subtleties of the earth?s magnetic field that these animals can ?feel.?

The book contains several anecdotes about animals that can sense when they are nearing their homes when returning from trips. But can?t these be explained by the animals seeing familiar landmarks, smelling familiar smells, and even picking up on the changes in behavior of their owners as they near home?

It?s those long journeys home and even to unfamiliar places by pets ? on their own ? that are most intriguing, and Sheldrake provides several examples in his book, including this remarkable tale:

My father-in-law had a small farm and on it he kept a watchdog, Sultan. One day my father-in-law became ill and was taken to the hospital by ambulance. A few days later he died and then he was buried in the local graveyard, five kilometers from the farm. Several weeks after the burial the dog was not seen for days. This seemed strange to us, as Sultan never used to stray. But we did not make much of it, until one Sunday a former employee came along, who lived near the graveyard. She told us: ?Imagine, when I went across the graveyard the other day, Sultan lay at your family grave.? I cannot fathom how he could have found the way all these five kilometers. There were no footprints of his former master that he could follow. And he had never been taken to the graveyard, not even to the fields, since he had to keep watch at the house. How is it possible that he found his master?s grave?

Animal Premonitions

In this section of the book, Sheldrake explores the possibility that some animals can forewarn us of events that are about to occur. Most common, perhaps are pets that seem to know when their owners are about to have epileptic seizures. Epilepsy, explained in the simplest terms, is a kind of temporary short circuit in the victim?s brain, resulting in convulsions, labored breathing and sometimes blackouts. Is it a real premonition the pet is having before the onset of such a seizure, or is it supersensitive to slight muscle tremors, subtle changes in behavior or emitted odors that even the victim is not aware of minutes before the seizure takes hold? Sheldrake notes that pet dogs, cats and even rabbits can be sensitive to the event.

Sheldrake wonders if animals are sensitive to other diseases as well. He offers some anecdotal evidence that could suggest that some pets have warned diabetics when their blood sugar was low, and also stories of pets that seem to know where cancerous spots are on their owners, long before the diagnosis is made.

Mentioned earlier is the ability of some animals to ?know? when an earthquake is about to occur. Before the quake actually starts, rats and snakes have been seen fleeing their burrows, horses and other farm animals become agitated, and birds fly away from the scene in great flocks. Again, this is almost certainly a case of supersensitivity to the environment rather than true precognition. The animal senses subtle vibrations, odors and electric and magnetic emissions resulting from the stresses within the earth.

Much harder to explain, however, are incidents in which the pet truly seems to have foreknowledge of some disastrous event ? an event for which there can be so sensory cues to pick up on. Sheldrake includes several interesting examples, including this one:

One morning my dog, Toby, tried to stop me going out of the front door. He barged against me, leaned on the door, jumped up at me, and pushed me. He is normally a quiet, loving dog and knows my routine; I would have been back within four hours. I had to lock him in the kitchen and left him howling, something he has never done before or since. I set off at 7:30 a.m. and by 9:40 a.m. I was involved in a horrific traffic accident resulting in a fractures neck and right arm, and many other injuries. In the future, I?ll listen to Toby.

Weather service money shifting problems hit agency

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The head of the National Weather Service has suddenly retired and the agency is seeking an emergency $35.6 million from Congress because of allegations of financial mismanagement and money shifting within the agency.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration chief Jane Lubchenco, who oversees the weather service, said in a memo investigators found that agency officials moved tens of millions of dollars around without congressional approval, as required by law. The money went from being appropriated for technology improvements to meeting shortfalls in payroll and operations at local weather offices.

Weather service director Jack Hayes retired Friday. His chief financial officer was already on administrative leave.

Agency spokesman Scott Smullen said investigators found no evidence of corruption or personal financial gain. The agency will soon release a report on the issue.

Beyonce Serenades Michelle Obama, Cements Comeback In Atlantic City

Queen B ascends her throne during the second in a four-night run of Memorial Day weekend shows.
By Rebecca Thomas

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey — The "year of 4" continues.

Four months after giving birth to her first child — an arrival announced last August at the MTV VMAsBeyoncé returned to the stage Saturday night, on the second of a four-night run in this East Coast resort city. And it was a spectacular fitting her rising icon status.

So what kinds of clues allude to near-icon status? Well, it's in the details. For one, Revel, the sparkling, 6.3-million-square-foot beachfront destination that played host to Beyoncé's comeback, devoted a channel on its guest-room flat-screen TVs solely to B-related content: no weather broadcasts, nary a "Housewife" and no commercial breaks; just videos, all-star performances and more, all through Memorial Day weekend. It was evident in the distance traveled, too, with fans telling MTV News they'd made cross-country pilgrimages, while still others came from as far as Tokyo and South Africa to hail the Queen B.

But those are just the hints, peripheral proof. The presence of First Lady Michelle Obama at last night's concert left little doubt that the little girl from Houston who joined a girl group and then struck out on her own had seen another benchmark in her relatively young career. After exchanging letters in recent months, with each calling the other a role model for girls, Obama turned up in a sleeveless green sheath waving like royalty from a balcony in Ovation Hall.

A little after 10 p.m., as the pounding opening march from "End of Time" kicked in, Beyoncé appeared in silhouette; the sequins were hard to make out but the wind-blown mane was impossible to miss. Finally, B, stunning in hot pink heels and a beaded body suit, appeared on the massive stage backed by her dancers.

"Atlantic City, snap your fingers," she commanded, launching into "Love on Top." Without missing a step of the New Edition-inspired choreography, B powered through the song's modulations in an extended vocal showcase. Then she took an exaggerated pause, as if to catch her breath (or to bask in the adulation?), before belting out a final coda. The 30-year-old's comeback was officially under way.

Pushing through hits from her debut solo effort, including "Naughty Boy" and the dancehall-infused "Baby Boy," and the Sasha Fierce smashes like "Diva," B defied all post-partum laws as she kept pace with Frank Gatson's acrobatic dance style. ("Y'all don't know how hard I had to work. I had to lose 60 pounds!" she laughed to the crowd later. "They had me eating lettuce.") And just as songs like "Single Ladies" and "Run the World (Girls)" are meant to serve as empowerment manuals for women, it became clear last night that Beyoncé's choreography is meant to do the same: a series of sensual quickstep moves that revolve around the hips and legs. It showed in the Fosse-style swing and formations on songs like "Get Me Bodied," and the strut-heavy footwork on "Freakum Dress."

"Sasha Fierce disappeared, but y'all bringing her back," B joked midway through the euphoric two-hour set.

For one of our favorite numbers, "Party," the 4 singer donned full-on showgirl regalia in a heady rendition that saw confetti coming from the roof and dice-shaped beach balls being tossed through the crowd as dancers in large feathered headdresses magically turned up in the aisles.

There were ballads, of course, at Ovation Hall, the more memorable among them a tribute to Whitney Houston and a cover of Lauryn Hill's classic "Ex Factor." And if Beyoncé reminded us of what we've lost in those gut-wrenching covers — she proved, too, that she's more than ready to carry the weight on her shoulders.

Share your reviews of Beyoncé's Revel shows in the comments!

PAN.THY.MONIUM Dream II music review by sagichim

2 stars The first thing i have to say about this EP is that i like it's anguished, tormented cover. Pan.Thy.Monium had always a thing for clocks, all their albums have the clock motif, i believe it's related to their concept story presented on their albums. This is an early recording of the band, featuring Dan Swano on bass guitar, and another Edge Of Sanity member, drummer Benny Larsson.

Actually i can't believe this is the same band who released three magnificent albums in the next 5 years, but then again a band has to start somewhere. Their music at the begining was nothing more than your usual death metal songs, i would have never guessed they would take such a giant leap to release their superb first full lenth album only the next year, an album with clear experimental writing, and a very mature approach. The band sticks with the usual instrumentation, no great solos (or solos at all), and no saxophone just yet. Keys are added, but still doesn't have such a good effect. The songs are really not bad, they are just quite simple, and not impressive. The music is based on the heavy riffing, and when those are mediocre, than there isn't much left to save this release. The band does work as a whole though, and plays a coherent death metal, but not more than this. This would appeal more to fans of the underground swedish death metal scene, or fans of the extreme metal without the progy influences. The sound is actually quite good for an obscure EP and The CD reissue offers a bonus track, which is cool. I really like this band, but i don't have any desire to listen to this again, i suggest to go for their debut. 2 stars, for collectors only!

Air show featuring military aircraft highlights holiday weekend in N.Y.

By midmorning, thousands sat under a sea of umbrellas on Jones Beach in Melville, N.Y., as a mammoth B-17 "Flying Fortress" bomber flew low just offshore.

A group of people sang "The Ride of the Valkyries," popularized in the 1979 film "Apocalypse Now," and began chanting "watermelons," knowing what was to come.

Dan Ialacci, 26, of Patchogue, said it was his fourth time coming to the show. "You see things you don't usually see," he said.

Moments later, he watched the bomber on its second pass drop several watermelons from its hatch.

Ialacci settled back to wait for what he said was his favorite part of the show: Helicopters flying upside down.

The Patchogue resident was among thousands who gathered Saturday morning under clear skies for the start of the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach, where a team of parachuters began the show at 10 a.m.

A steady stream of spectators, many of them with young children, made their way from parking lots, carrying lawn chairs and coolers, for first day of the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach.

Mark Fox, 41, of Coram, his wife, Jennifer, 41, and sons, Angelo, 10, and Aiden, 7, were among them.

"It's a nice family day," he said. "You come to the beach, hang out with the kids and just relax."

Jennifer Fox was anticipating the planes. "I like the really loud ones that shake your whole body," she said. Angelo said he was looking forward to the tricks, recalling how bombers dropped watermelons into the ocean at last year's show.

Steve Jay, 51, of Smithtown, said he was coming for the first time. "It's going to be an impressive display of technology," he said.

Some, however, saw not fun but death in the mostly military airplanes at the air show.

About 35 demonstrators stood at the entrance to the show near pink ribbons they'd tied to a railing. They stood in a line holding photos of members of the U.S. military who have died in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Judy Gardner, 65, of Huntington said, "I want people to remember Memorial Day isn't a day to glorify war but to remember people who've lost their lives. The air show, she said, "leads young people think war is a game. It's not a game."

For the most part spectators filed by the vigil wordlessly, but Sister Mary Beth Moore, 64, of Wantagh, said one man had intentionally bumped her and told her she was blocking his way.

Gardner said that when the group began the annual vigil eight years ago "people would spit on us." But she said last year the group got more thank yous or just silence.

Jay Gottlieb, 55, of upstate Pleasantville, who was on his way to the show with his two sons said "Thank you" to the protesters as he walked by.

"I have mixed feelings," he said after he walked away. "It does glorify war. But at the same time the planes are really cool. In a way it [the air show] does honor people [who've given their lives in the military]."

Near the demonstrators Phila Strehl, 72, of Farmingdale, collected donations for the Farmingdale American Legion Hall. The money, he said, would go to the Northport VA Medical Center and other medical programs for veterans.

Strehl, who said he served stateside in Georgia during the beginning of the Vietnam War in 1960-63, said he'd been at Long Island National Cemetery, Pinelawn, at 6:30 a.m. Saturday to place flags on the graves of veterans, including some he knew from Hicksville High School who died in Vietnam.

"I think of them every day," he said, but Memorial Day weekend was a time to remember veterans especially. He had no problem with the air show.

"It's a just a great way for young people to come out and be exposed to the military," he said.

Idaho town seeks to lure gun and ammo makers

(AP) ? This small community in the forested, western foothills of the Rocky Mountains was created as a company town to house workers for the nation's largest white pine sawmill, and its tidy homes and straight, tree-lined streets are a testament to its planners.

But the town has slumbered since the Potlatch Lumber Co. mill closed in 1981, and was searching for an economic future when an ammunition maker decided last year to move its operations from the liberal Seattle area to this more conservative region.

The move by PNW Arms was like a signal flare to business and political leaders in the town of 800 people, who were in the process of trying to determine what industry would be best to pursue.

"We were in the middle of doing our marketing plan at the time and decided that firearms is the niche we would recommend," said Gary White of Kennewick, Wash., a business marketing consultant who is helping develop the town's pitch to gun makers.

Potlatch, they decided, would go from timber town to gun town. It would try to lure firearms and ammunition makers, and plans also called for hunting-themed housing and retail development.

"It will help draw some out-of-towners and out-of-staters," Mayor David Brown said.

Potlatch's efforts piggyback on a national trend in which firearms-friendly states are trying to pry gun and ammo makers out of the Midwest and Northeast, where some states have more restrictive gun laws.

The Idaho Department of Commerce is making firearms manufacturers a recruiting priority. The state recently passed a law that protects firearms makers from liability lawsuits or excessive regulation, White said.

"Lots of states are anti-firearms states," White said. "That is what Idaho is playing against, positioning itself as a firearms friendly state."

Firearms are a $3.8 billion industry that employs 90,000 people in the United States. The industry includes household names like Remington, Winchester, Smith & Wesson and Colt, but also more than 1,000 smaller companies.

"There are a number of states in the South and out West that have pitched to have companies relocate or start businesses in their states," said Lawrence Keane, spokesman for the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the industry trade group.

South Dakota has had some success in luring companies, and states like Alabama, Montana, Idaho and Arizona have also rolled out the welcome mat, Keane said.

Many firearms companies have long been headquartered in states like Massachusetts and Connecticut, where the political climate has turned more hostile to firearms. Massachusetts, for example, has passed laws limiting the number of guns people can buy. Several states have passed or proposed laws calling for their gun makers to "micro-stamp" handguns with a mark on the firing pin that would allow bullet casings to be identifiable by gun owner.

No such fears in Idaho, a conservative state where firearms are a daily part of many people's lives.

"The regulatory environment in Idaho is friendly to guns and ammunition and we thought we could take this and run with it," said B.J. Swanson, head of economic development for Latah County.

Potlatch went public in April with its come-hither pitch to gun makers.

"We've had two nibbles already and we haven't even tried," Swanson said.

Swanson acknowledged that gun manufacturers would not be welcomed everywhere. Even in Latah County, they might face opposition 15 miles away in liberal Moscow, where the University of Idaho is based.

"In Potlatch, they would be welcomed with open arms," Swanson said. "I have not heard a single person in Potlatch saying, 'We don't want them here.'"

White agreed: "If we proposed this in Seattle or Portland, I'm sure it would be entirely different. For Potlatch, Idaho, this makes absolute sense."

The idea is to create a niche, like guns, and then recruit a cluster of companies to fill it, White said. In nearby Dayton, Wash., White is helping develop an organic food retail and business park to cash in on the tourists who visit the farm town.

Potlatch was created in 1905 to provide homes for the 500 workers at the Potlatch Lumber Co. mill. Nineteen of the homes built by the company are on the National Register of Historic Places, and City Hall used to be the mill headquarters. The mill closed in 1981, and no major business activity has emerged to replace the lumber jobs.

But Potlatch didn't shrivel up. Located a short distance from the university towns of Moscow and Pullman, Wash., Potlatch became a bedroom community for workers and students at both schools. Busy State Highway 6 serves as the main street through the town, and the small business community actually has trouble finding workers, said Dale Spring, owner of Dale's Wagon Wheel Bar & Grill.

Spring wonders where the workers would come from for any new firearms factory. "There's no labor force," he said.

Many Potlatch residents work at the universities, or at one of the thriving private sector employers in the Moscow-Pullman area, he said.

Local economic development leaders believe good-paying jobs will draw workers.

The lure for manufacturers is the former lumber mill site, of which 26 acres is set aside for firearms and related companies, White said. The mill site is currently without buildings, but has nearby utilities, is flat and the town has plenty of water and sewer capacity, Swanson said.

Nationally, there has been a big jump in the popularity of target shooting, largely the result of a slew of television programs on that subject, White said. They expect Potlatch's plan to appeal to some of those people, he said.

The marketing effort is funded by Potlatch Corp, which still owns the mill site, by local utility Avista, and by local city and county governments.

Town leaders were careful to use the word "firearms'" in the pitch, Mayor Brown said. "Firearms sounds more friendly than gun park," Brown said.

Asteroid nudged by sunlight: Most precise measurement of Yarkovsky effect

ScienceDaily (May 24, 2012) ? Scientists on NASA's asteroid sample return mission, Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security, Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx), have measured the orbit of their destination asteroid, 1999 RQ36, with such accuracy they were able to directly measure the drift resulting from a subtle but important force called the Yarkovsky effect -- the slight push created when the asteroid absorbs sunlight and re-emits that energy as heat.

"The new orbit for the half-kilometer (one-third mile) diameter 1999 RQ36 is the most precise asteroid orbit ever obtained," said OSIRIS-REx team member Steven Chesley of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. He presented the findings May 19 at the Asteroids, Comets and Meteors 2012 meeting in Niigata, Japan.

Observations that Michael Nolan at Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico made in September 2011, along with Arecibo and Goldstone radar observations made in 1999 and 2005, when 1999 RQ36 passed much closer to Earth, show that the asteroid has deviated from its gravity-ruled orbit by roughly 100 miles, or 160 kilometers, in the last 12 years, a deviation caused by the Yarkovsky effect.

The Yarkovsky effect is named for the nineteenth-century Russian engineer who first proposed the idea that a small rocky space object would, over long periods of time, be noticeably nudged in its orbit by the slight push created when it absorbs sunlight and then re-emits that energy as heat.

"The Yarkovsky force on 1999 RQ36 at its peak, when the asteroid is nearest the sun, is only about a half ounce -- about the weight of three grapes on Earth. Meanwhile, the mass of the asteroid is estimated to be about 68 million tons. You need extremely precise measurements over a fairly long time span to see something so slight acting on something so huge."

Nolan and his team measured the distance between the Arecibo Observatory and 1999 RQ36 to an accuracy of 300 meters, or about a fifth of a mile, when the asteroid was 30 million kilometers, or 20 million miles, from Earth.

"That's like measuring the distance between New York City and Los Angeles to an accuracy of two inches, and fine enough that we have to take the size of the asteroid and of Arecibo Observatory into account when making the measurements," Nolan said.

Chesley and his colleagues used the new Arecibo measurements to calculate a series of 1999 RQ36 approaches closer to Earth than 7.5 million kilometers (4.6 million miles) from the years 1654 to 2135. There turned out to be 11 such encounters.

By combining the radar results from Arecibo Observatory with infrared results from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, the scientists also learned that asteroid 1999 RQ36 is very light -- it has around the same density as water, Chesley reported.

"This study is an important step in better understanding the Yarkovsky effect -- a subtle force that contributes to the orbital evolution of new Near-Earth Objects," said Dante Lauretta, the mission's principal investigator and professor of planetary science at the University of Arizona.

Lauretta added that "this information is critical for assessing the likelihood of an impact from our target asteroid and provides important constraints on its mass and density, allowing us to substantially improve our mission design."

The OSIRIS-REx spacecraft is to launch in 2016, reach asteroid (101955) 1999 RQ36 in 2019, examine it up close during a 505-day rendezvous, then return at least 60 grams (~1.9 ounces) of it to Earth in 2023.

"In addition to the exciting Yarkovsky results, the low density shows that 1999 RQ36 is probably a loose aggregate of rocks--a so called rubble pile," said Jason Dworkin, the mission's project scientist and Chief of Astrochemistry at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "This makes it an ideal target for OSIRIS-REx to collect loose surface material."

Mars 'has life's building blocks'

New evidence from meteorites suggests that the basic building blocks of life are present on Mars.

The study found that carbon present in 10 meteorites, spanning more than four billion years of Martian history, came from the planet and was not the result of contamination on Earth.

Details of the work have been published in the journal Science.

But the research also shows the Martian carbon did not come from life forms.

A team of scientists based at the Carnegie Institution for Science, based in Washington DC, found "reduced carbon" in the meteorites and says it was created by volcanic activity on Mars.

Reduced carbon is carbon that is chemically bonded to hydrogen or itself.

They argue this is evidence "that Mars has been undertaking organic chemistry for most of its history."

The team's leader Dr Andrew Steele told BBC News: "For about the last 40 years we have been looking for a pool of what is called 'reduced carbon' on Mars, trying to find where it is, if it's there, asking "does it exist?"

"Without carbon, the building blocks of life cannot exist... So it is reduced carbon that, with hydrogen, with oxygen, with nitrogen make up the organic molecules of life."

He says the new analysis has answered the first question.

"This research shows, yes - it does exist on Mars and now we are moving to the next set of questions.

"What happened to it, what was its fate, did it take the next step of creating life on Mars?"

He hopes the next mission to land on the Red Planet - the Mars Science Laboratory, also known as the "Curiosity" rover - will shed more light on the big question.

"The question 'are we alone' has been a big driver of science but it relates back to our own origins on this planet. If there is no life on Mars why? It allow us to make a more informed hypothesis about why life is here."

So does Dr Steele think there was, or is, life on Mars?

He laughs: "Get me some rocks back, I'll have a look and let you know."
