Analysis: Emerging deadly virus demands swift sleuth work

LONDON | Wed Feb 27, 2013 8:34am EST

LONDON (Reuters) - The emergence of a deadly virus previously unseen in humans that has already killed half those known to be infected requires speedy scientific detective work to figure out its potential.

Experts in virology and infectious diseases say that while they already have unprecedented detail about the genetics and capabilities of the novel coronavirus, or NCoV, what worries them more is what they don't know.

The virus, which belongs to the same family as viruses that cause the common cold and the one that caused Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), emerged in the Middle East last year and has so far killed seven of the 13 people it is known to have infected worldwide.

Of those, six have been in Saudi Arabia, two in Jordan, and others in Britain and Germany linked to travel in the Middle East or to family clusters.

"What we know really concerns me, but what we don't know really scares me," said Michael Osterholm, director of the U.S.-based Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy and a professor at the University of Minnesota.

Less than a week after identifying NCoV in September last year in a Qatari patient at a London hospital, scientists at Britain's Health Protection Agency had sequenced part of its genome and mapped out a so-called "phylogenetic tree" - a kind of family tree - of its links.

Swiftly conducted scientific studies by teams in Switzerland, Germany and elsewhere have found that NCoV is well adapted to infecting humans and may be treatable medicines similar to the ones used for SARS, which emerged in China in 2002 and killed a tenth of the 8,000 people it infected.

"Partly because of the way the field has developed post-SARS, we've been able to get onto this virus very early," said Mike Skinner, an expert on coronaviruses from Imperial College London. "We know what it looks like, we know what family it's from and we have its complete gene sequence."

Yet there are many unanswered questions.

SPOTLIGHT ON SAUDI ARABIA, JORDAN

"At the moment we just don't know whether the virus might actually be quite widespread and it's just a tiny proportion of people who get really sick, or whether it's a brand new virus carrying a much greater virulence potential," said Wendy Barclay, a flu virologist, also at Imperial College London.

To have any success in answering those questions, scientists and health officials in affected countries such as Saudi Arabia and Jordan need to conduct swift and robust epidemiological studies to find out whether the virus is circulating more widely in people but causing milder symptoms.

This would help establish whether the 13 cases seen so far are the most severe and represent "the tip the iceberg", said Volker Thiel of the Institute of Immunobiology at Kantonal Hospital in Switzerland, who published research this month showing NCoV grows efficiently in human cells.

Scientists and health officials in the Middle East and Arab Peninsular also need to collaborate with colleagues in Europe, where some NCoV cases have been treated and where samples have gone to specialist labs, to try to pin down the virus' source.

"ONE BIG VIROLOGICAL BLENDER"

Initial scientific analysis by laboratory scientists at Britain's Health Protection Agency (HPA) - which helped identify the virus in a Qatari patient in September last year - found that NCoV's closest relatives are most probably bat viruses.

It is not unusual for viruses to jump from animals to humans and mutate in the process - high profile examples include the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that causes AIDS and the H1N1 swine flu which caused a pandemic in 2009 and 2010.

Yet further work by a research team at the Robert Koch Institute at Germany's University of Bonn now suggests it may have come through an intermediary - possibly goats.

In a detailed case study of a patient from Qatar who was infected with NCoV and treated in Germany, researchers said the man reported owning a camel and a goat farm on which several goats had been ill with fevers before he himself got sick.

Osterholm noted this, saying he would "feel more comfortable if we could trace back all the cases to an animal source".

If so, it would mean the infections are just occasional cross-overs from animals, he said - a little like the sporadic cases of bird flu that continue to pop up - and would suggest the virus has not yet established a reservoir in humans.

Yet recent evidence from a cluster of cases in a family in Britain strongly suggests NCoV can be passed from one person to another and may not always come from an animal source.

An infection in a British man who had recently travelled to Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, reported on February 11, was swiftly followed by two more British cases in the same family in people who had no recent travel history in the Middle East.

The World Health Organization says the new cases show the virus is "persistent" and HPA scientists said the cluster provided "strong evidence" that NCoV, which like other coronaviruses probably spreads in airborne droplets, can pass from one human to another "in at least some circumstances".

Despite this, Ian Jones, a professor of virology at Britain's University of Reading, said he believes "the most likely outcome for the current infections is a dead end" - with the virus petering out and becoming extinct.

Others say they fear that is unlikely.

"There's nothing in the virology that tells us this thing is going to stop being transmitted," said Osterholm. "Today the world is one big virological blender. And if it's sustaining itself (in humans) in the Middle East then it will show up around the rest of the world. It's just a matter of time."

Power Matters Alliance garners support from BlackBerry, NEC, TI and ZTE

Another Mobile World Congress, another round of highfalutin' talk surrounding the concept of wireless power. We already witnessed a consumer approach by PowerbyProxi, and now we're hearing that the Power Matters Alliance is getting a second wind as well. The self-proclaimed "leading ecosystem and standard for wireless power" took to Boston-area Starbucks locations last fall, and now it has notched support from BlackBerry, NEC, Texas Instruments, ZTE and dozens more. There's still no word on whether all of these factions are going to bite the bullet and come together in order to actually make some progress that consumers can appreciate, but hey -- we've got nothing but time, right?

Mutant champions save imperiled species from almost-certain extinction

Feb. 19, 2013 ? Species facing widespread and rapid environmental changes can sometimes evolve quickly enough to dodge the extinction bullet. Populations of disease-causing bacteria evolve, for example, as doctors flood their "environment," the human body, with antibiotics. Insects, animals and plants can make evolutionary adaptations in response to pesticides, heavy metals and overfishing.

Previous studies have shown that the more gradual the change, the better the chances for "evolutionary rescue" -- the process of mutations occurring fast enough to allow a population to avoid extinction in changing environments. One obvious reason is that more individuals remain alive when change is gradual or moderate, meaning there are more opportunities for a winning mutation to emerge.

Now University of Washington biologists using populations of microorganisms have shed light for the first time on a second reason. They found that the mutation that wins the race in the harshest environment is often dependent on a "relay team" of other mutations that came before, mutations that emerge only as conditions worsen at gradual and moderate rates.

Without the winners from those first "legs" of the survival race, it's unlikely there will even be a runner in the anchor position when conditions become extreme.

"That's a problem given the number of factors on the planet being changed with unprecedented rapidity under the banner of climate change and other human-caused changes," said Benjamin Kerr, UW assistant professor of biology.

Kerr is corresponding author of a paper in the advance online edition of Nature the week of Feb. 9.

Unless a species can relocate or its members already have a bit of flexibility to alter their behavior or physiology, the only option is to evolve or die in the face of challenging environmental conditions, said lead author Haley Lindsey of Seattle, a former lab member. Other co-authors are Jenna Gallie, now with ETH Zurich, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, and Susan Taylor of Seattle.

The species studied was Escherichia coli, or E. coli, a bacterium commonly found in the lower intestine and harmless except for certain strains that cause food-poisoning sickness and death in humans. The UW researchers evolved hundreds of populations of E.coli under environments made ever more stressful by the addition of an antibiotic that cripples and kills the bacterium. The antibiotic was ramped up at gradual, moderate and rapid rates.

Mutations at known genes confer protection to the drug. Researchers examined these genes in surviving populations from gradual- and moderate-rate environments, and found multiple mutations.

Using genetic engineering, the scientists pulled out each mutation to see what protectiveness it provided on its own. They found some were only advantageous at the lower concentration of the drug and unable to save the population at the highest concentrations. But those mutations "predispose the lineage to gain other mutations that allow it to escape extinction at high stress," the authors wrote.

"That two-step path leading to the double mutant is not available if a population is immersed abruptly into the high-concentration environment," Kerr said. For populations in that situation, there were only single mutations that gave protection against the antibiotic.

"The rate of environmental deterioration can qualitatively affect evolutionary trajectories," the authors wrote. "In our system, we find that rapid environmental change closes off paths that are accessible under gradual change."

The work was funded by the National Science Foundation, including money through the consortium known as the Beacon Center for the Study of Evolution in Action, and UW Royalty Research Funds.

The findings have implications for those concerned about antibiotic-resistant organisms as well as those considering the effects of climate and global change, Kerr said. For instance, antibiotics found at very low concentrations in industrial and agricultural waste run-off might be evolutionarily priming bacterial populations to become drug resistant even at high doses.

As for populations threatened by human-caused climate change, "our study does suggest that there is genuine reason to worry about unusually high rates of environmental change," the authors wrote. "As the rate of environmental deterioration increases, there can be pronounced increases in the rate of extinction."

8 arrested in slaying of Russian councilman

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russian investigators have now arrested eight people in the case of a city councilman found dead in a cement barrel, allegedly after he owed $80 million in a business deal gone awry.

The Investigative Committee said Tuesday it arrested one man suspected in the murder-kidnapping of Mikhail Pakhomov and another accused of a related theft. The 37-year-old councilman in Lipetsk, 350 kilometers (215 miles) south of Moscow, disappeared last week after three men forced him into a car. His body was found Monday.

Evgeny Kharitonov, a former deputy minister in Moscow's provincial government, is charged with organizing the kidnapping over what police called an $80 million debt. A warrant has been issued for his business partner.

Pakhomov had a construction business before becoming a politician.

Chinese New Year parade slithers through Vancouver to kick off Year of the Snake

Lion dancers and firecrackers stirred up a crowd of about 50,000 people who lined the sidewalk Sunday for the annual Chinese New Year parade.

Ashley Williams, 20, has watched the event every year since she was seven. She remembers seeing celebrants kick off the Year of the Dragon in 2000 from the window of her mother?s store on East Pender Street, Ming Wo Cookware.

Click here to see a photo gallery from the parade

?You get to see a lot of the Chinese traditions,? she said. ?It brings a lot of people into Chinatown and reminds them about their identity, because people can forget.?

She said the parade as a celebration of community but also an educational experience for the whole city. This year, as in the past 13 years, her mother hung a head of lettuce with a red-wrapped wad of cash inside from the store entrance. Lion dancers from one of the benevolent associations came by Sunday morning, bowed to the three-eyed lion heads in the display windows, trouped through the store to bless the premises and collected their donation.

?They do it to bring luck to everyone for the year related to the store,? Williams said.

The parade presented a cavalcade of multicultural emblems ? red envelopes, Japanese taiko drums, even Scottish bagpipes ? as the celebration slithered clamorously through downtown Vancouver to ring in the Year of the Snake.

Embodying the cultural mosaic were red-and-gold-bedecked participants bearing the national flags of both China and Canada. They performed a Tai Chi Kung Fu fan routine while behind them mustachioed brass band musicians from the Burnaby Fire Department blared a marching tune.

Community group members mingled with lion dance troupes ? the largest annual assembly of them in Canada ? in the signature event of Vancouver?s Chinatown. It is the third largest such celebration in North America.

Jenny Li and her son Johnny were attending for the third time.

?It?s fantastic, especially for the kids,? Li said. ?It was very good to refresh our memories of Chinese culture.?

?I loved it,? exclaimed Johnny, who at age 12 was born in 2001, the last Year of the Snake. ?All the candy, and the snakes and the dragon dance, too.? ?Lion dance,? his mother corrected.

Dotting the procession were unofficial envoys from other cultural groups, including Vietnamese Canadians and banjo-picking Americans. Volunteers handed out red envelopes stuffed with candy ? not cash ? as Chinese firecrackers clacked on the pavement to inaugurate the Lunar New Year.

A 15-metre electro-mechanical snake slithered along the route. The self-propelled serpent, a project sponsored by the eatART Foundation, sports an enormous aluminum head and red tongue and added a technological edge to to the parade as its pistons, gears and wires ? bound in red tape for the occasion ? moved in slithery sync.

The parade drew 60 entries and 3,000 participants, including many from outside of the Chinese community.

Run primarily by the Chinese Benevolent Association of Vancouver since 1979, the parade started earlier this year, at 11 a.m., to accommodate its growing size, continuing for 2 1/2 hours.

The 1.3-kilometre route began at the Millennium Gate on East Pender Street (between Shanghai Alley and Taylor Street), proceeded east along Pender, turned south onto Gore Street then west on Keefer Street, dispersing on Keefer at Taylor Street.

After the parade, the festivities continued with multicultural performances at the Dr. Sun Yat Sen Classical Chinese Garden.

High school boys swimming: St. Joseph's Carroll leads parade of records

MISHAWAKA ? In a meet in which it was hard to stand out, South Bend St. Joseph senior Trevor Carroll showed how ready he is to head back to the IHSAA State Championships next week.

Carroll left the Penn pool with three firsts, including the distinction as the only double individual winner from the Penn Sectional Saturday.

Carroll will return to defend his state title in the 200 freestyle after winning that event Saturday before he turned in virtuoso performances in his other two victories.

Penn took the team title, its fourth straight, with 521 points. St. Joseph finished second with 447.

The sectional field proved to be the deepest, at least since the middle of the last decade, as seven sectional and five pool records were set. Also, there were multiple qualifiers in five events.

?This is the fastest the sectional has been in my career,? Carroll said. ?It was fun to be a part of this.?

Carroll opened the day with a 1:41.03 clocking to win the 200 free. While an outstanding time, it was over two seconds slower than his sectional record time of a year ago.

Carroll, however, won the 500 free in an outstanding 4:27.55 effort. That shattered the sectional record by more than 13 seconds and broke the pool record (4:31.25) set in 1998.

?It just felt awesome,? said Carroll. ?I felt most of the season I wanted to swim this event, but I wanted to do what was best for the team first. Our sprinters came along great, so that opened up the 500 for me.?

He brought the rest of the field along as well, as the next three finishers (in order, Penn?s Bowen Anderson, Riley?s James Salmon and Penn?s Hudson Bursch) all beat the state qualifying time.

After helping St. Joe to second in the 200 free relay (in which the Indians qualified, as well), Carroll finished the day by anchoring the 400 free relay.

Penn had a solid lead through the first three legs of the race, leaving its anchor, Seamus Lucero-Dixon, with a body-length lead. Carroll, however, made that up during the first 50 yards, then brought home a sectional and pool record time of 3:09.87. Billy Miller, Anthony Kolbus and Andre Marin swam the first three legs.

?When I anchor relays,? Carroll explained, ?I don?t look where anyone else is at during the first half. I just swim my race. After that, I just wanted to hold off (Lucero-Dixon) and we got a school record out of it, too.?

Penn also qualified with a 3:11.44 clocking, capping a banner day for the Kingsmen.

Penn opened the meet with a sectional and pool record in the 200 medley relay as the Anderson brothers (Tanner and Bowen) joined Mate Kovacs and Lucero-Dixon to win in 1:34.65.

Tanner Anderson came back to win the 200 IM (1:55.39) before Kovacs took the 50 free (:21.86) to give the Kingsmen firm control in the team standings.

From there Penn came through with four firsts. Bowen Anderson (a sophomore) won the 100 butterfly in a sectional and pool record time of :50.37, followed by Lucero-Dixon, who took care of the 100 free (:47.63). The 200 free relay of Tanner Anderson, Kovacs, Travis Bavar and Lucero-Dixon set Penn?s final sectional and pool record of the day with a 1:25.96 time before freshman Kyle Morris won the 100 backstroke in :54.34.

?We?re right on track for next week,? Penn coach Jess Preston said. ?We kept Seamus and Mate to just one individual event so they could help us in the relays and Tanner and Bowen were outstanding for us. We wanted to get them through in four events and they got it done.?

The final new sectional mark came from St. Joe?s Chris Bals, who took the 100 breaststroke in :57.36.

Is Harrison Ford Back For 'Star Wars'?

Harrison Ford will apparently play Han Solo in "Star Wars: Episode VII."

That's the report from Latino Review reporter Umberto ?El Mayimbe? Gonzalez, who went on Fox News Latino to break the news that Ford had signed on to appear in the new "Star Wars" film. According to Gonzalez, the deal is "significant." HuffPost Entertainment has reached out to Ford's publicist for confirmation, but has not heard back.

UPDATE, 2/15: According to EW.com writer Geoff Boucher, Ford's deal is not yet complete and it could be "months" before he signs.

The original story continues below.

That Ford would return to "Star Wars" is somewhat expected. Back in November of 2012, shortly after Disney announced plans for further "Star Wars" films, EW.com's Geoff Boucher revealed that Ford was interested in coming back, though the star did have one request: that Han Solo perish in the new film.

Ford hasn't been shy about his vision of the Han Solo character; he famously wanted Solo to die at the end of "Star Wars: Episode VI - The Return of the Jedi," but George Lucas decided that would be a bad idea for financial reasons.

"I thought he should have died in the last one, just to give it some bottom; some gravitas," Ford told Peter Travers in an interview with ABC in 2010. "George didn't think there was any future in dead Han toys."

During that same interview, Ford expressed concern about there being any future for Solo. "I don't think there's a way to weave him back into the story," he said.

The Latino Review report is just the latest "Star Wars" rumor to hit the internet this year. Some of the news has been confirmed (J.J. Abrams will direct the next installment in the franchise), while others have not (Disney still hasn't locked down any of the rumored standalone films, which could focus on a young Han or Yoda).

For more on Ford's return, head over to Latino Review.

  • Sam Claflin

Forget it, everyone; it's Claflin-town. (See "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," "Snow White and The Huntsman," "Catching Fire" and his vest.)

  • Chace Crawford

When you stop laughing about Crawford, consider that before "Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope," Harrison Ford was best known for playing horndog hotshot Bob Falfa in "American Graffiti."

  • Garrett Hedlund

Give CinemaBlend editor Katey Rich credit for this one: "Hedlund is 29 and could play younger if need be, and has both the good looks and the physicality to convincingly grow up to become Harrison Ford."

  • Dane DeHaan

DeHaan looks like a young Leonardo DiCaprio IRL and acts like a young Ryan Gosling in "The Place Beyond The Pines." He's sneaky old (27), but why couldn't he grow up to be Harrison Ford, too?

  • Taylor Kitsch

Because Josh Holloway and Nathan Fillion are too old.

  • Jeremy Jordan

Squint and he kind of looks like Harrison Ford. (Also, thanks to the terrible "Smash" season premiere ratings, he'll have some free time on the calendar soon enough.)

  • Liam Hemsworth

Because every list of young actors under 30 needs two Hemsworths.

  • Chris Hemsworth

    Here's No. 2.

  • Eddie Redmayne

Eddie Redmayne looks nothing like Harrison Ford, and is so British that he probably bathes in Earl Grey. That said, the "Les Miserables" star is knocking on the door of franchise stardom: he was on the "short lists" for "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "The Amazing Spider-Man 2." Hollywood executives want to give this guy a big shot -- and his work with the Wachowskis in "Jupiter Ascending" could be the launching pad to "Star Wars."

  • Jim Sturgess

Find and replace on the Redmayne blurb.

  • Zachary Levi

Call him a poor man's Redmayne. Levi has been on the cusp of fame for awhile, and -- better yet -- has instant cred with the Comic-Con crowd thanks to his role on "Chuck." Unfortunately, he might be too old to play a guy younger than Harrison Ford in "Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope." (He's already 32.)

  • Jai Courtney

From John McClane, Jr. to young Han Solo?

  • Zac Efron

After getting peed on by Nicole Kidman, Efron deserves a break.

  • Michael Angarano

Not only could he pass for young Harrison Ford, but he possesses a youthful enthusiasm despite his age (25) that suits the character.

  • Aaron Taylor-Johnson

No movie would suffer from having Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the lead. (Except maybe "Savages.")

  • Matt Lauria

    If Kitsch is busy.

  • Skylar Astin

Real talk for one second: Skylar Astin is your next big movie star. He oozes charisma, looks the part of a space smuggler and gives the Han Solo movie a connection to "Pitch Perfect."

GAO: Climate change on federal risk list for 1st time

By Gil Aegerter and Rich Gardella, NBC News

The federal government is facing significant financial risks related to extreme weather events, and states and cities can no longer depend on it for extra help after such events occur, the Republican chairman of House Oversight and Government Reform Committee said Friday.

The warning from Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., came at a press conference about the release of a new report by the Government Accountability Office, which identified ?climate change? on its 2013 list of items presenting high risk to the federal government.

The report said the federal government faces financial challenges from climate change, including the costs of weather-related damage to property it owns, losses through flood insurance and crop support programs, and costs of emergency aid in disasters.

?These events are primarily the responsibilities of the cities and states,? Issa said at the news conference. ?And I will point out that we can no longer assume that the federal government will come in with an emergency supplemental [funding] every time there is an [extreme weather] occurrence. We have a responsibility to be proactive: Proactive in asking the states and the cities to be prepared to meet more of these requirements.? Proactive in making sure that we withhold the funds, either through insurance funds or through actual appropriations, that are appropriate for the real anticipated events.?

The GAO?noted that the Federal Emergency Management Agency is on the hook for more than $80 billion in aid for disasters declared during the 2004-2011 fiscal years -- and the White House asked for more than $60 billion in aid to help the East Coast recover from Hurricane Sandy.

Read the GAO report in PDF form

And yet, the report says, the government has not been coordinating a response to climate change among its agencies --- partly a problem of the complexity of the issue. The report advises that a strategic plan be developed, directed at common goals for all federal agencies.

The report is a biennial assessment of government operations it deems at high risk for fraud, waste, abuse and mismanagement or as otherwise "needing broad-based transformation." Some of its other recommendations:

  • Develop a better understanding of how a changing climate will affect the large federal flood and crop insurance programs. For instance, the report said, sea-level rise and long-term erosion should be considered when flood maps are updated.
  • Develop a federal approach to providing climate data to state and local governments so they can make better decisions.
  • Develop better criteria for FEMA to assess a jurisdiction's ability to recover on its own after a disaster.

In a related issue, the report also says looming gaps in coverage by polar-orbiting weather satellites could affect forecasts and "warnings of extreme events."

The satellites provide a global perspective each morning and afternoon. The report said the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has acknowledged there could be a gap of 17 to 53 months between the time the current afternoon satellite fails and the time a new one can be launched to replace it.?

The report also noted that the risk of a gap exists in coverage by the satellite in the morning orbit -- if the Department of Defense's next satellites don't work as intended.

The report said NOAA officials believe these gaps "would result in less accurate and timely weather forecasts and warnings of extreme events, such as hurricanes, storm surges and floods."

After the report?s release, members of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee held a news conference at which both Democrats and Republicans acknowledged the government?s significant fiscal exposure as a result of weather related disasters.

Issa called it a ?nonpartisan? issue, while ranking Democrat Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., labeled the GAO report ?a wake-up call? for Congress to start paying attention to impacts of climate change.

In total, the GAO report listed?30 federal programs and operations on its high-risk list. Climate change risk and the weather satellite gap were both new additions. Management of interagency contracting and IRS business systems modernization both were removed from the list because the GAO decided that sufficient progress had been made to address past vulnerabilities.

Apple Loses Rights to iPhone Name in Brazil

To most consumers, the iPhone name is practically synonymous with Apple. That?s not the case in Brazil, however, where regulators ruled that Apple does not have the exclusive rights to use the ?iPhone? trademark. A local company named Gradiente Eletronica previously applied to register the name in 2000 and was granted rights to it in 2008.

Apple petitioned for rights to the name, claiming that Gradiente had not used it in the past five years. That argument was derailed when Gradiente suddenly released a new product at the end of last year with the name iPhone Neo One, which?was enough to convince Brazil?s Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) to rule in Gradiente?s favor. To add insult to injury, Gradiente?s iPhone runs on Android, the chief competitor to Apple?s iOS.

The decision means that while Apple can continue to sell its iPhones in Brazil, Gradiente has an option of suing for exclusivity to the name at any time. The BBC reported that INPI understands that Apple is currently seeking to appeal the decision. In the meantime, Gradiente has indicated that it is open to negotiations and it is likely willing to cut a deal? for the right price, of course.

Universal dates mystery Illumination movie for 2015

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Universal Pictures announced Tuesday that it will release a new movie from "Despicable Me" producer Illumination Entertainment July 4 weekend in 2015. The studio would not disclose anything else about the movie, which will be Illumination's sixth feature film since Chris Meledandri founded it in 2007.

However, we can tell you what it will and won't be. It will be an original, animated movie, a spokesman for Meledandri and Universal told TheWrap. That means it won't be the reboot of the Grinch that Illumination and Universal are cooking up.

In its ambiguous Monday announcement, Universal said the new Illumination movie will be released in 3D, and the studio's new spin on the iconic Dr. Seuss character will also be a 3D feature. Still, "original" crosses off Grinch.

It also won't be a live-action film, Meledandri's spokesman said. Though Universal has said Illumination will, at some point, make a live-action movie, the only such project the production company has kicked around is a Dr. Seuss biopic.

Illumination has an exclusive financing and distribution deal with Universal, and thus far has made "Despicable Me," "The Lorax" and "Hop." The company has two more projects on deck before this untitled feature: the sequel to "Despicable Me," due out July 3, and a spin-off of that franchise, "The Untitled Minions Project," due out in 2014. This new movie won't be "Despicable Me" related, Meledandri's spokesman said.

So what will it be? Stay tuned.

(AP) ? North Korea's neighbors bolstered their military preparations and mobilized scientists Wednesday to determine whether Pyongyang's third nuclear test, conducted in defiance of U.N. warnings, was as successful as the North claimed.

The detonation was also the focus of global diplomatic maneuvers, with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry reaching out to counterparts in Seoul, Beijing and Tokyo. President Barack Obama used his State of the Union address to assure U.S. allies in the region and warn of "firm action."

"Provocations of the sort we saw last night will only isolate them further as we stand by our allies, strengthen our own missile defense and lead the world in taking firm action in response to these threats," Obama said.

The nuclear device detonated Tuesday at a remote underground site in the northeast is seen as a crucial step toward North Korea's goal of building a bomb small enough to be fitted on a missile capable of striking the United States.

North Korea said it tested a "smaller and light A-bomb, unlike the previous ones, yet with great explosive power." Still, just what happened in the test was unclear to outsiders.

Intelligence officials and analysts in Seoul raised the possibility of another nuclear test and of ballistic missile test-launches. North Korea's Foreign Ministry said the latest test was merely its "first response" to what it called U.S. threats and that Pyongyang will continue with unspecified "second and third measures of greater intensity" if Washington maintains its hostility.

South Korea has raised its military readiness alert level, and on Wednesday it used aircraft and ships, as well as specialists on the ground, to collect air samples to analyze possibly increased radiation from the test, according to the Defense Ministry. Japanese fighter jets were dispatched immediately after the test to collect atmospheric samples. Japan has also established monitoring posts, including one on its northwest coast, to collect similar data.

Underground nuclear tests often release radioactive elements into the atmosphere that can be analyzed to determine key details about the blast. One of the main points that intelligence officials want to know is whether the device was a plutonium bomb or one that used highly enriched uranium, which would be a first for North Korea.

In 2006 and 2009, North Korea is believed to have tested devices made of plutonium. But in 2010, Pyongyang revealed it was trying to enrich uranium, which would be a second source of nuclear bomb-making materials ? a worrying development for the United States and its allies.

Generally, it takes about two days for such radioactive byproducts from the North's test site to reach South Korea, Defense Ministry spokesman Kim Min-seok said Wednesday.

South Korea also said Wednesday it has deployed cruise missiles with "world-class accuracy and destructive power" that are capable of hitting any target in North Korea at any time, and is speeding up the planned deployment of ballistic missiles.

Kim said Seoul believes North Korea made test preparations at two underground tunnels and may still be able to conduct another atomic test in the second unused tunnel.

In an emergency session, the U.N. Security Council unanimously said the test poses "a clear threat to international peace and security" and pledged further action.

It remains to be seen, however, whether China will sign on to any new, binding global sanctions. Beijing, Pyongyang's primary trading partner, has resisted measures that would cut off North Korea's economy completely.

The test was a defiant North Korean response to U.N. orders that it shut down its atomic activity or face more sanctions and international isolation. It will likely draw more sanctions from the United States and other countries at a time when North Korea is trying to rebuild its moribund economy and expand its engagement with the outside world.

The test "was neither a surprise nor an occasion for panic," said Robert Hathaway, director of the Woodrow Wilson Center's Asia program. "Nonetheless, this latest provocation clearly constitutes a serious challenge to U.S. and international efforts to block the North from acquiring a nuclear weapons arsenal."

Tuesday's test was North Korea's first since young leader Kim Jong Un took power over a country long estranged from the West. The test will likely be portrayed in North Korea as a strong move to defend the nation against foreign aggression, particularly from the U.S.

The U.N. Security Council recently punished North Korea for a rocket launch in December that the U.N. and Washington called a cover for a banned long-range missile test. Pyongyang said it was a peaceful launch of a satellite into space. In condemning that launch, the council demanded a stop to future launches and ordered North Korea to respect a ban on nuclear activity or face "significant action" by the U.N.

It wasn't immediately clear to outside experts whether the device exploded Tuesday was small enough to fit on a missile. A successful test would take North Korean scientists a step closer to building a nuclear warhead that could reach U.S. shores ? seen as the ultimate goal of North Korea's nuclear program.

Uranium would be a worry because plutonium facilities are large and produce detectable radiation, making them easier for outsiders to find and monitor. However, uranium centrifuges can be hidden from satellites, drones and nuclear inspectors in caves, tunnels and other hard-to-reach places. Highly enriched uranium also is easier than plutonium to engineer into a weapon.

"North Korea will want to send a message that its nuclear and missile issues cannot be resolved with sanctions and that high-level talks with the U.S. are necessary," said Cheong Seong-chang, an analyst at the private Sejong Institute in South Korea, referring to the possibility of another nuclear or missile test.

Despite tensions, he predicted U.S.-North Korea diplomatic talks could occur later this year.

"The biggest U.S. concern is whether the North has made progress in its uranium enrichment program. It's a matter of nuclear proliferation. To resolve this, the U.S. cannot help but talk with North Korea," he said.

New SARS-like virus shows person-to-person transmission

LONDON (Reuters) - A third patient in Britain has contracted a new SARS-like virus, becoming the second confirmed British case in a week and showing the deadly infection is being spread from person to person, health officials said on Wednesday.

The latest case, in a man from the same family as another patient, brings the worldwide number of confirmed infections with the new virus - known as novel coronavirus, or NCoV - to 11.

Of those, five have died. Most of the infected lived or had recently been in the Middle East. Three have been diagnosed in Britain.

NCoV was identified when the World Health Organisation (WHO) issued an international alert in September 2012 saying a virus previously unknown in humans had infected a Qatari man who had recently been in Saudi Arabia.

The virus belongs to the same family as SARS, or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome - a coronavirus that emerged in China in 2002 and killed about a tenth of the 8,000 people it infected worldwide. Symptoms common to both viruses include severe respiratory illness, fever, coughing and breathing difficulties.

Britain's Health Protection Agency (HPA) said the latest patient, who is a UK resident and does not have any recent travel history, is in intensive care at a hospital in central England.

"Confirmed novel coronavirus infection in a person without travel history to the Middle East suggests that person-to-person transmission has occurred, and that it occurred in the UK," said John Watson, the HPA's head of respiratory diseases.

He said the new case was a family member in close contact with another British case confirmed on Monday and who may have been at greater risk because of underlying health conditions.

The WHO said although this latest case shows evidence of person-to-person transmission, it still believes "the risk of sustained person-to-person transmission appears to be very low".

RISK VERY LOW, BUT VIRUSES CAN MUTATE

Coronaviruses are typically spread like other respiratory infections such as flu, travelling in airborne droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

Yet since NCoV was identified in September, evidence of person-to-person transmission has been limited.

Watson said the fact it probably had taken place in the latest two cases in Britain gave no reason for increased alarm.

"If novel coronavirus were more infectious, we would have expected to have seen a larger number of cases than we have seen since the first case was reported three months ago.

Tom Wilkinson, a senior lecturer in respiratory medicine at Britain's University of Southampton, said that if NCoV turned out to be like the previous SARS outbreak, it may prove quite slow to spread from one human to another.

"But it's early days to make any definite statements because viruses can change and mutate very rapidly, so what is right today may be wrong tomorrow," he told Reuters.

Based on the current situation, the WHO said all member states should continue surveillance for severe acute respiratory infections and investigate any unusual patterns.

"Testing for the new coronavirus should be considered in patients with unexplained pneumonias, or in patients with unexplained severe, progressive or complicated respiratory illness not responding to treatment," it said in a statement.

The WHO said on Monday that the confirmation of a new British case did not alter its risk assessment but "does indicate that the virus is persistent".

The British patient confirmed on Monday had recently travelled to Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, and is in intensive care in a separate British hospital, the HPA said.

Among the 11 laboratory confirmed cases to date, five are in Saudi Arabia, with three deaths; two are in Jordan, where both patients died; three are in Britain, where all three are receiving treatment; and one was in Germany in a patient from Qatar who had since been discharged from medical care.

The WHO said at this stage there is no need for travel or trade restrictions, or for special screening at border points.

Apple Loses ?iPhone? Trademark In Brazil

Apple has lost the ?iPhone? trademark in Brazil, thanks to a?local company named Gradiente Eletronica, who registered the name back in 2000 i.e seven years before Apple, reports BBC. A couple of months back,?Gradiente also launched an Android-powered phone named ?iPhone? in the country.

65871279 gradiente

While an Apple spokesperson declined to comment on the ruling, the Institute of Industrial Property has reported that Apple is pursuing an appeal against the Brazilian court?s decision. Though?Apple can still continue to sell its iPhone in Brazil, Gradiente however has an option of suing for exclusivity, notes the source.

The INPI added that its decision only applied to handsets, and that the California-based company continued to have exclusive rights to use the iPhone name elsewhere including on clothing, in software and across publications.

INPI added that Apple had argued that it should have been given full rights since Gradiente had not released a product using the iPhone name until December 2012.?

Bloomberg previously reported that the chairman of Gradiente had said: ?We?re open to a dialogue for anything, anytime? we?re not radicals.?

The Brazilian company is selling its Android-powered iPhone for approximately $300.

Meet the Chinese smartphones

By Kurt Wagner, reporter

130212171024-huawei-w1-phone-340xaFORTUNE -- It's no secret that China is a hotbed for mobile growth, particularly when it comes to smartphones. In fact, China is currently the top smartphone market in the world, accounting for 26.5% of all smartphone shipments last year, according to IDC. Not surprisingly, the country is home to a number of up-and-coming phone makers, energized by enormous mobile growth. Three of the world's top five smartphone manufacturers -- Huawei, ZTE and Lenovo -- are from China, according to research from Canalys. The question is, can Chinese smartphone success translate to the U.S.?

Korean phone maker Samsung is proving Asian suppliers can find the U.S. profitable. Samsung's Galaxy S III is successfully fighting Apple's (AAPL) iPhone for market share both domestically and abroad. (The S III outsold iPhones globally for the first time in the third quarter of 2012.) Plus, the company's clever advertising campaign mocking those waiting in long lines for the iPhone has proven that Apple's hold on American consumers isn't unassailable.

MORE:?How Mailbox became an instant sensation

If the most recent CES conference was any indication, Samsung will be joined shortly by numerous Chinese competitors. Huawei, ZTE and TCL, another Chinese phone maker, have all announced plans to bring phones to U.S. markets in 2013. (ZTE is keeping its product lineup a mystery, according to a company spokesman.) Lenovo is the only member of the group which said that it would not be bringing a smartphone to the U.S. this year. So what can we expect from such devices? Here's a closer look:

Phone: Huawei W1
Maker: Huawei (pronounced WAH-way)
Release Date: 2013

The Huawei W1 is the company's first Microsoft (MSFT) Windows 8 smartphone, and while the phone made an appearance at CES, the release date and available carriers are still under wraps. The phone is not remarkably slim compared to competitors (nearly 10.2 mm), but it does come in a variety of colors and boasts a whopping 470 hours -- that's nearly 20 days -- of 3G standby time. Other key stats:?4-inch touch screen;?5.0 megapixel rear-facing camera; 0.3 megapixel front-facing camera;?720P video recording.

Phone: ONE TOUCH Idol Ultra
Maker: TCL Communication
Release Date: 2013

TCL makes Alcatel (ALU) ONE TOUCH devices that have already been in the U.S. market for years, but its 2013 smartphone lineup boasts four new devices: the ScribeHD, Idol Ultra, Idol, and M'Pop. The Idol Ultra is pegged by TCL as the "slimmest smartphone yet," coming in at 6.45 mm thick. (By comparison, the iPhone 5 is 7.6 mm thick.) The Ultra Idol will also be operating on a Google (GOOG) Android OS.?Other key stats:?4.7-inch HD display;?8.0 megapixel rear-facing camera;?1080P video recording.

Fire leaves Carnival cruise ship adrift in Gulf of Mexico

A voyage on the Carnival Triumph has ended less than triumphantly, with the cruise ship waiting to be towed to port after a fire in the engine room left it drifting in the Gulf of Mexico.

The fire broke out Sunday morning as the Triumph -- with 3,143 passengers and 1,086 crew members on board -- was sailing about 150 miles off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, Carnival Cruise Lines said in a statement.

The flames were put out without any injuries to passengers or crew, but the incident left the ship without propulsion and operating on emergency generator power. Efforts were under way to make conditions less miserable for the passengers.

?Currently, public and cabin toilets are operational in certain sections of the ship, power has been restored to a limited number of elevators, and some power in the Lido dining area is providing for hot coffee and limited hot food service,? Carnival said.

?Guests have been supplied with food and refreshments throughout yesterday and this morning and the ship has supplies on board to last until the vessel returns to port.?

Some passengers have started to grumble about the new realities on board, with one man telling CruiseCritic.com that his wife reported standing in line for more than two hours to get hamburgers and salad.

Two tugboats are en route to the ship and will tow it to Progreso, Mexico, the closest port to the Carnival Triumph?s current location. The ship is expected to arrive there late Wednesday and passengers will be flown back to the U.S. on chartered planes, Carnival said.

Another one of the company?s ships, the Carnival Elation, was dispatched to the scene and has been delivering ?additional food and beverage provisions? to the Triumph. The company's Carnival Legend ship will also help out Monday afternoon. Additionally, the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Vigorous is also on site, communicating with the ship and on standby in case it needs any assistance.

"We don?t really anticipate them needing any help," said Petty Officer 3rd Class Richard Brahm, a spokesman for the U.S. Coast Guard, adding that there doesn't appear to be any danger to anyone on board the Triumph.

"Nothing bad has happened to the ship ... we?ll follow them all the way in and that will pretty much end it for the Coast Guard."

The ship left Galveston, Texas, on Thursday, and was scheduled to return on Monday. Passengers will receive a full refund and a future cruise credit, Carnival said.

The ship?s next two voyages, scheduled to depart Monday and Saturday, have been canceled. Passengers scheduled to sail on either of those voyages will receive a full refund and a discount on a future cruise.

The incident comes more than two years after another Carnival ship, the Splendor, was crippled at sea by a fire in the engine room.

But the current mishap is "a little bit less complicated" because the Triumph is much closer to shore than the Splendor was at the time of its accident, said Carolyn Spencer Brown, editor in chief of CruiseCritic.com.

The fact that two Carnival ships have had such similar problems gave her pause, but it didn't make her question the cruise line, she added.

"It?s just unfortunate," Brown said. "Carnival is known for taking safety, security and maintenance very, very seriously ... certainly, ships have mechanical issues."

The incident likely will not put people off from booking a cruise,Brown said, noting that things can go wrong on vacation, whether someone is at sea or on land.

Should You Reconcile With An Ex? [EXPERT] | Dr. Dar Hawks ...

reconcile with your ex
Should you give your ruined relationship a second try?

Consider these three factors first.

Pining for the "good old days" with your ex can be a nice break from your daily routine, but when is it a good idea to hold out hope of reconciliation?

More from YourTango: 6 Signs That Your Marriage Is On The Rocks [EXPERT]

Well, there are three foundational requirements for a healthy relationship. They are: trust, open communication and balancing individuality with being a couple.

Without trust, a relationship cannot survive.
