Strategic Planning for 2012 ? Executive ... - Credit Union Business

Posted by admin at 8:00 pm 0 Comment Print

By Bridget McNamara-Fenesy

As the turn of the calendar page moves us into a new year, credit union boards and senior management are focused on strategic planning and goal setting for 2012. Of course, the budgeting process is front and center at this time of year, and as the economy moves in fits and starts, the focus continues to be on doing more with less, creating greater efficiencies, and monitoring the bottom line.

But finding financial efficiencies is not always about cost-cutting. In fact, the greatest impact on a credit union?s financial health will probably have little to do with quarterly, or even annual, numbers. In order to truly make an impact on the financial health and viability of the credit union, boards and senior management need to be thinking long-term, and they need to be thinking strategically, not tactically.

To build a successful financial institution, credit unions must have the right people in the right places doing the right things at the right time. This does not happen by accident. Credit union boards must focus their attentions on who can lead the credit union into the future, and then assure that they have the programs in place to keep those leaders aligned with the goals of the membership.

One of the primary ways to do this is through a comprehensive and competitive compensation package. But this does not mean that a credit union should simply find out what local competitors are paying, meet that for their own CEO, and consider their job done. The first step in creating an effective compensation program is in developing a compensation philosophy that is unique to the credit union. What is your charter? What are the goals for your members? How can those goals be integrated into the compensation philosophy for your credit union? How is that philosophy translated into an effective compensation package for the CEO? And how does what is developed for the CEO become integrated into the compensation package for the rest of the senior management team? Everyone in a senior management position should understand the goals of the credit union, and what their role is in making that happen. If that is clear, then reward systems, both in the short-term and the long-term, can be built to support those objectives.

In the newly published The Survey? 2011: Employee and Executive Compensation and Benefits for the Credit Union Movement, some important findings on executive attraction, retention and reward systems come to light. Compensation planning and development is becoming more complex.? Credit unions, especially the larger ones, compete with not just other credit unions for top leadership talent, but with banks and other financial service companies. Recruitment is no longer a local process, but can be national in scope. To attract and retain the best talent, credit unions must develop programs that tie reward to performance, and provide that reward proximate to the actions that gave rise to the performance. But performance-based compensation programs are only effective if the board knows what performance is desired on an objective and measurable level. Credit unions are increasingly assigning the job of development of a strategic compensation plan to a specific board committee, most often the Compensation Committee.

Just a few short years ago, executive reward programs were driven primarily by a retrospective look at performance, with board discretion serving as the leading factor in establishing executive bonus levels.? If the credit union had a good year, the board gave the CEO a pat on the back with a bonus that was determined after the fact, and based upon a general feeling of a job well done. The Survey 2011 reports that incentive compensation is increasingly based upon measureable and objective pre-determined performance factors, with loan growth and ROA utilization reported in 2011 as the leading factors in establishing performance based compensation systems. This is not surprising, given an environment where loan demand is weak and placement of funds is difficult. Board discretion has dropped from a 46-percent preponderance just two short years ago to a 26-percent preponderance today.

Credit union boards are prudent in retaining a degree of discretion in the calculation of CEO bonuses, to allow for a subjective component in the mix, as well as to allow for some flexibility in the event of unforeseen events that may impact the credit union?s goals. However, tying bonus awards to metrics that are consistent with the strategic goals of the credit union and communicating these targets in advance assures an alignment between compensation philosophy and practice. The criteria will likely include attainment of financial goals for the credit union as a whole, people or management goals, as well as specific targets that will be important to the credit union in a particular performance evaluation period.

It is also important to tie performance factors for an executive to areas in which the executive can actually make a difference. As the CEO has ultimate responsibility for leading the credit union successfully in all arenas, the CEO?s performance factors should be far broader than the other executive team members. But all performance factors should be supportive of the overall credit union objectives, so that when the members win, so too does the executive team.

This focus on tying pay to performance is not limited to annual bonus awards. In fact, pay-for-performance is becoming an increasingly utilized strategy in the development of long-term incentive plans. These plans, when properly structured, not only provide a reward program for the executive team, but they serve to create a retention and succession program by keeping the entire executive team focused on longer-term, strategic goals, and aligning? the credit union?s success with their own. Short-term goals should be rewarded through short-term bonus programs, while longer-term objectives can be supported through a strategically developed long-term incentive plan, in which executives are rewarded for moving the credit union successfully into the future. An integrated compensation philosophy is the road map to get you there.

Bridget McNamara-Fenesy works with Executive Compensation Solutions to support credit union boards in the development of strategic compensation and benefit programs that align the interests of credit union members with their executive team. Bridget has worked in the area of executive compensation design for over 25 years. She holds a BA degree from the University of Notre Dame, a JD degree from the University of Denver and the Certified Employee Benefit Specialist designation from the Wharton School of Business.?

Insurance | Health Insurance Options For Early Retirees

One of my biggest worries about early retirement is health care. The cost of health care keeps increasing every year, and it is outpacing inflation by a wide margin. Sometimes I wonder if my investments can keep up with rising health care costs. This is a big problem for early retirees because we won?t qualify for Medicare until age 65. If you retire before then, medical insurance can be very expensive and difficult to find. Here are some options for those of us who dream of early retirement:

[See 10 Important Ages for Retirement Planning .]

COBRA . If you leave a job with a group health insurance plan, the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act allows you to continue using the same health care plan for a limited amount of time if you are willing to pay the whole cost. This means you will have to pay any amount your employer used to cover plus administrative expenses. The good thing about COBRA is that you benefit from the group rate and continued coverage. However, the cost can be a bit shocking to employees who formerly paid only a part of the cost. COBRA coverage generally lasts for up to 18 months, so if you are 63 and a half, this might be the way to go until you qualify for Medicare.

Retiree health insurance . Some companies offer retiree health insurance to long-tenured employees. To qualify, your age plus your years of service might need to pass a certain threshold, such as 70. If you are hoping to retire with such a plan, get all the information from your company retirement program. Some programs may subsidize a portion of your health insurance premium until Medicare kicks in.

[See How Long Should I Work Before Retirement? ]

Part-time job . A part-time job might provide the health insurance you need until you are old enough to qualify for Medicare. Costco, Starbucks, and Trader Joe?s are some of the companies that provide health care benefits to their part-time employees. However, there might be a qualifying period before part-timers can sign up for the health care plan, which could vary from a few months to a year or more.

Spouse?s insurance . If you have a working spouse whose employer offers a family health care plan, this is another way to fill in the health insurance gap. The premium is generally much less than buying insurance privately.

Private insurance . This is a very costly option because you do not receive any group discounts. The insurance provider can also decline your application if you have pre-existing conditions. Your state may have a group plan that you can join if you?ve been turned down by a private insurer. Your state may also subsidize a portion of the health care premium if your income is below a certain level. However, low income plans might have many requirements and a long wait time to join.

[See How to Finance Life Until 100 .]

On demand health care . This might be a good option if you are young and relatively healthy. On demand health care clinics offer an affordable option for everyday health problems. For example, each visit at ZoomCare costs $99, which may be a good short-term solution if you don?t have a chronic illness. But this may not be a good option for older people because long-term illnesses may crop up.

Finding affordable health care is a huge problem for early retirees, and there is no easy way to avoid the high price. Perhaps we will have more options when the health insurance exchanges become operational. Until then, we just have to take care of our health as much as possible and minimize our health care costs through better living .

Data Backup System Toronto |Disaster Recovery Small Business ?

Home ? Blogs, Events, Surveys, Uncategorized

A backup system and disaster recovery plan is ESSENTIAL for every business.

If you think ?data backup? is synonymous with ?disaster recovery? and aren?t sure what ?business continuity? means, you?re not alone. Most of the business owners we talk to make the mistake of not knowing the difference and end up paying the price when data is lost, a network goes down or a disaster prevents them from accessing their physical office and the server inside.

?First, data backup simply means a copy of your data is replicated to another device or location. Tape drives, offsite backup and even USB devices provide data backup.? Data backup is obviously important. However, the more important consideration is whether or not your backup solution provides easy disaster recovery, or the ability for you to recover all your files, software and functionality quickly, easily and without corruption.? For example, if your server died, you wouldn?t be able to quickly get back to work if you only had file-level backup. In order for you to start working again, your server would need to be replaced, all software re-installed, data re-installed and then the whole system would need to be configured with your settings and preferences. This process could take hours or even days ? and that?s if you have all your software licenses and a clean copy of your data.

Then there?s business continuity. This is the ability for your business to continue to operate even after a major disaster. For example, if you ran a law firm and your building burned to the ground, you?d be out of business if all your files were on the server only. However, if you had your network in the cloud, your employees could continue to work from home or some other location, giving your business continuity.

Of course, you need all three at some level. At a minimum you need to make sure you have in place the right backup and disaster recovery plan for your tolerance for downtime, and a plan for how your business could continue to operate if you could no longer access your building, server or data. You should review your plan annually. If you want a simple and easy way to get all of this handled, give us a call! We specialize in planning, implementing and managing these projects so you don?t have to.

Pub owner Karen Murphy wins appeal in TV-decoder battle against Sky

Pub owner Karen Murphy wins appeal in TV-decoder battle against Sky
It's been a few months since we last heard about the legal kerfuffle between Sky and pub owner Karen Murphy. In case you've been out of the loop, it all started when the UK broadcasting giant went after Murphy for using what was deemed to be an illegal method for screening FA Premier League matches at her, or any, bar. The Greece Nova decoder, which is considered a legal bit in the privacy of your own home, was helping Murphy bypass Sky's £480 ($740) required monthly fees for bar owners and saving her over £350 ($555) in the process. Now, over $260,000 in legal fees later, Mrs. Murphy's conviction has been overturned by the relentless High Court. The ruling allows her to keep using the troubled Greek gadget to screen any EPL game without facing any troubles -- except the occasional drunken fracas. So, now you know where to go the next time you're in Portsmouth and want to catch a good ol' footy match.

Payday Loans Canada: No Faxing No Collateral Instant Finance

An amount up to $1,500 is advanced towards Payday loans Canada to the people living in Canada which simply explains that the amount of loan is small. However small the amount may be, it is considered as great assistance by the people who are to depend solely on their fixed and limited monthly earning. It is more so, because the ever-rising market price has been creating serious problem in the society where individuals are in no state, most of the time, to pull on with what they earn.

Payday loans Canada are available to the citizens of Canada and to the authorized residents of this country, but the finance seekers must be adult or over 18. The finance providers do know their business pretty well and delaying can never be noted in their syllabus. They receive the loan application and go through the entries made by the loan seekers. If the loan application is found to be all right, they dispatch the payable amount to the bank account of the respective borrow, electronically, and immediately. This is why the borrower must hold an active and valid bank account.

The lending agencies determine the amount that they advance to the eligible loan seekers towards payday loans Canada. The amount is fixed on the basis of the range of monthly earning of the applicant. It is an imperative that the loan seekers are employed or self-employed. They must support the loan application with certified documents to make it clear that they have substantial income on monthly basis.

Payday loans Canada come against the paycheck of the next month and the finance program is not attached to collateral. This is to imply that the loan seekers are not instructed to put up any sort of tangible property as security. Finance of this kind is again exempted from faxing. Moreover, people who have stained their credit report are also allowed to go for payday loans Canada.

Payday loans Canada are associated with higher rates of interest. The borrower must not leave any mark of negligence in repayment. They must be regular in paying back the loan amount. If it is not done or if the lenders do not get back their investment within stipulated time, they charge the borrowers with penalties or fines. The tenure for repayment is no doubt short; the finance providers offer two to four weeks only. The loan seekers, after they get the loan amount, can independently spend the same for purposes that they will consider necessary and important.

Deepwater Horizon disaster could have billion dollar impact

ScienceDaily (Feb. 17, 2012) ? The Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in April 2010 will have a large economic impact on the U.S. Gulf fisheries. A new study published in the Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences (CJFAS) says that over 7 years this oil spill could have a $US8.7 billion impact on the economy of the Gulf of Mexico. This includes losses in revenue, profit, and wages, and close to 22 000 jobs could be lost.

"Unlike the visually obvious and immediate effects on birds and mammals, the effects of oil on fisheries can be more difficult to detect, though they are no less devastating," says lead author U. Rashid Sumaila. "Oil and hydrocarbons are taken up by plankton and other surface-dwelling species that link to aquatic food chains." This in turn affects the fishing industry.

The Deepwater Horizon, a British Petroleum oil rig, exploded in the Gulf of Mexico on 20 April 2010. By August 2010 it was estimated that it had leaked an estimated 4.9 million barrels of oil (780 million L), making it the largest accidental marine oil spill in US waters. In comparison, the Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1989 amounted to less than 0.5 million barrels. This study estimates the economic impact this spill will have on commercial and recreational fisheries and mariculture in the Gulf of Mexico.

Nicki Minaj Shows Three Sides Of Herself On Magazine Covers

The rapper talks fashion, feminism and Jay-Z in interviews with Vibe, Allure and New York
By Jocelyn Vena

Nicki Minaj on the cover of Vibe

As Nicki Minaj prepares to release her new album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, in April, she's all over newsstands. She will appear on three different magazine covers, each showing different sides of the rapper and touching on her many philosophies about her career, her persona and her place in the rap world.

Allure teased its April cover featuring Minaj, in which the sassy songstress sports a big, pink tulle skirt. In the interview, she opens up about telling Jay-Z he really does need to Watch the Throne with her around. "I had a little conversation with Jay-Z at the Victoria's Secret fashion show," she recalled. "He said, 'Congratulations on all your success.' And I was like, 'Yeah, I'm coming for you. I'm coming for your spot, Mr. Mogul.' "

Speaking of her supreme queen dominance, on the cover of the February/March issue of Vibe, she's donning a sparkling crown and inside the issue she talks all about her place in the game as a woman.

"It's not hard to get your way when it's your way or the highway. People either follow suit or they're not around. I don't really like the sound of that, 'cause that sounds like a temper tantrum. I'm just very black and white when it comes to my business," she said. "There's really no gray area. I really don't have a lot of small talk with people I work with. It's pretty much let's get the job done. In the beginning, if people didn't know me they'd probably assume I wasn't smart or wasn't business savvy. But once you sit and talk to me, it's a different story."

And, then there's her watercolor-y New York Magazine cover where the fashionista talks about her place among the hip fashion crowd. "I'm not impressed to be in that world. I'm in my own world. I think sometimes the fashion world isn't even about clothes anymore; it's about this 'in' crowd, and I'm not into that," she explains, after sharing what her fashion mantra is. "I like the idea of doing something that everyone else is not. I get high off that. Just the idea that other people don't have the balls to do something — that's my thing."

Fat chance you may say but I overcame Obesity | AguiLeon

After my daughter's birth I was busy nursing and taking care of her that I neglected my appearance. I guess this is something all of us do for a while after delivery. As a new mom you're busy enjoying motherhood and juggling house work, office as well as the new born. There is no time for grooming yourself and that is the time your treacherous body cheats on you. I put on weight and before long I was weighing 160 pounds. I was always short of breath and running around the house made me tired and weary through out the day. My temper was bad and my husband had a hard time wondering what's wrong with me. I couldn't fit into my clothes and had to sheepishly move towards the plus size counter at the store. I had severe back pain due to overweight and it was a task to get up from bed in the mornings. With physical obesity combined mental stress and I was on the verge of a breakdown.

I met my GP who advised me to start a diet program to lose weight. I tried but there was no sign of shedding the pounds. Meanwhile my low back pain continued and made life miserable for me. That is when my husband held my hand gently and talked to me about yoga. He showed me a few videos on You Tube and I was intrigued by this wonderful art form. Though skeptical I thought let me try, after all I've nothing to lose. The first few sessions went off well and I started to feel better mentally.

Yoga helps you to be agile
The basic yoga poses like padmaasan, suryanamaskar, trikonasana, paschimottanasana, pranayam gave me flexibility and I found myself being more agile. I started with the basic yoga poses and moved on to the intermediate level after two months. In these two months I could feel myself getting lighter and mentally I was more focused and relaxed than before.

Combine diet with yoga
Along with yoga I controlled my diet. I stopped eating sugar, starch and fats. Instead I devised a meal plan where I had a raw diet day, fish day and fruits evening in my menu. Instead of bacon and eggs for breakfast I substituted it with fruits and fresh cranberry/orange juice. Munching on carrots and nuts between meals kept the urge to chomp fries at bay.

Tuna fish for lunch along with salad, dressings with olive oil saw to it that I didn't add to the kilos. Following a strict yoga and diet regimen helped me to become flexible and shed the kilos. I came down to 120 pounds within two months. My back pain vanished like magic and I could fit into my old clothes. I felt so happy that I continued with the same diet and yoga sessions. Within four months I was looking my ravishing self and my husband just couldn't take his eyes off me. With inner glow thanks to yoga and a new haircut and shapely me, I am eagerly awaiting Valentine's Day. I am sure my husband will surprise me with gifts galore! Viola!!
